Where do you buy eyeglasses?

My current glasses are 7 years old, and while the prescription is still good, I really want a new pair. I know today's groupon is for Pearle Vision, but does anybody have any other recommendations (even if it means I'll pay more)? Alternatively, does anybody have any rants or raves about Pearle? We don't have vision insurance, so being able to use the groupon to save would be great, but great customer service and a good selection matters more. I looked at frames at my eye doctor while I was there yesterday, but I wasn't really impressed by their selection. My prescription is really strong, so online places like Zenni Optical don't work well for me - getting the ultra thin lenses makes them too expensive to buy without being able to try them on first.

Re: Where do you buy eyeglasses?

  • I have a few friends that use this website:

    http://www.zennioptical.com/cart/home.php

They are so cheap b/c the lenses are plastic instead of glass. Jaredsgirlerin (long lost Nestie) uses it I know. I haven't personally ordered, but my H and I have looked. You just have to call and get your prescription from your doc.

  • Ha. Nevermind. I just skimmed your post.

  • No problem - I wish I could use Zenni, but it's $79 for the lenses with my prescription there.  That's a really good price for my lenses, but it's a little more than I'd like to pay without trying them on first...I'm still really tempted, though.
  • I don't have any problems with Pearle.  That's where H and I have been going for the past few years for our check up and contacts.

Probably close to 5 years ago I got a bad eye infection and couldn't wear my contacts so I had to buy glasses.  Pearle was the only place that would take my prescription and get me the glasses in an hour.  They were really good.  I haven't been able to update the prescription in them, but the frames are holding up nicely.

  • We go to Costco.  They have a good selection, and the prices are reasonable.
  • I'm glad you posted this, because I'm thinking about taking advantage of today's Groupon coupon too.  I need some prescription sunglasses.
  • I purchased my latest glasses and sunglasses from Costco.
  • Thanks, everybody!  I think I'm going to give Costco a try.  I went there after work - the selection is so-so, but they have a couple of pairs that I liked.  I'm a little nervous about it because they're so much cheaper than Pearle for high index lenses, but I don't really have much to lose - my current glasses are still the right prescription, and I don't really wear my glasses all that often; I just want something cuter.  Cute + cheaper = Big Smile
