Name change questions

I've been dragging my feet on this whole changing my name thing. The biggest reason I haven't done anything about it is that I'm going to a conference in Ireland in the beginning of September and my flight is in my maiden name. I've thought about changing my name on everything except my passport, but I don't even know if this is legal. Does anybody have any experience with this?

I haven't even changed my name on Facebook yet, which apparently MIL doesn't much like. I do plan to do it, but I sort of don't feel ready to get rid of my old name. Is that strange?

Re: Name change questions

  • I am having some of the same issues. I already changed my name with ss and DMV, but kept my passport in my current name. I had no idea when I would get my new DL and we are flying across the country on Wednesday (so the ticket is in my maiden name). I will be applying for a new passport and changing all my banking info when we get back from our trip. If you've already bought your plane tickets, I would keep your passport in your maiden name.

  • Maybe change it on facebook....but I'd leave the rest until after your trip. You have to go to ss first with a copy of your marriage license. Then the DMV. Then you can do your passport and your banks, etc.

  • I'm going to get my SS changed wednesday..I tried to find it today and got lost haha and I work until after the office closes tomorrow..so wednesday it is haha. Then I'm going to get my DMV as soon as I have the money too

I didn't change my passport b/c our tickets were in my maiden name too, I'll probably just wait to change that until I need it again since we'll have to buy a new one

  • I am still trying to decide IF I will even change my name... it has been a BIG debate in our house... I really like my last name, I am not at all a fan of his last name... I really feel like I am giving up a part of myself and my identity and I don't want to do that... I am considering hyphenating, I think that is the best idea... Because for me professionally, it makes MUCH more sense to keep my maiden name... so i think for now I am going to keep my maiden name professionally and use my married name amongst our friends and family...  but I REALLY don't like his last name... why does this have to be such a big deal?!?!?!

  • I don't blame you for not changing your name yet.  Your license and flight info do need to match.

I must admit that I am so excited to use my new name.  I love my maiden name, but love being married and using a new name.  when school starts again in a couple of weeks, i will be mrs.  i am heading to do my name change stuff tomorrow.

  • I'm actually in a similar situation (traveling in Sept)- here is what was recommended to me: you can change your SS card and drivers license as long as you wait on changing your passport and a credit card (if you want to auto check-in to your flight using a kiosk at the airport). However, I don't know how well that would work if u need to rent a car at your destination... That could be problematic.
