Do you have an Energy Retail provider? WWYD?

Our airconditioning bill last month was ridiculous.  We can't afford to upgrade to an efficient airconditioner right now when ours works perfectly fine.  My mom signed up for Dominion's retail energy and loves it.  I called Dominion and they currently have a rate of 5.99 cents per Kwh, this would be fixed until Dec 2011.  They did say that if they have a lower rate during our contracted time we could call to have it lowered to the current rate.  Duke Retail Energy is 15% off the going Duke rate.  The current Duke rate is 9.5cents per Kwh so with the discount it is about 8 cents.  It seems like Dominion is the obvious choice but since it's fixed if there is a big price drop in current energy rates I could end up paying more.  I realize historically rates only increase but which would you sign up for?  If you already have an energy retail provider who do you use and how do you like it?

  • I've read a bit about some of these providers, and I'm hesitant because of hidden costs.  But that's just me.

Anyway, there are other things that do help with the energy cost- get CFL bulbs, keep the blinds shut during the day, and run ceiling fans (or install them).  You'd be amazed at what a ceiling fan does to the temps in teh room at a fraction of the cost.  Also, we don't turn lights on during the day unless it's really dark out due to a storm.  You really don't need them.

  • How many kWh did you really use?  Often, these retailers only save money for people that use a ridiculous amount of energy (as in non-residential customers).  I would calculate how many hours you used times the difference in price to see how much you are really saving.  That being said, if it is a significant amount, go for it.  We use a retailer at work- we researched a couple and read the contracts in and out.  We are using First Energy and do not have any complaints after several months.

  • I deal with energy on a regular basis and can tell you that there is a reason that they are considered discount. I havent heard of that company (I work at a more national level) but I can tell you that I would look at all of the costs. Everyones bills are high right now due to the heat. Hang in there.
