Yesterday, there was a post about Foodie registries... which made me think that I'd like to buy a GC to a nice restaurant for a friend's wedding (especially since all of the stuff on their registry either sucks or is really expensive). They're moving to NYC within the next 2 months, and I'm looking for a place to buy a GC. The gift card will be in the $100-150 range. Obviously that won't cover a meal at some of these "nice" places (but, the couple likes to go out to eat good food - and I can see them not forgoing use of the GC because it won't cover the whole meal...) but may cover lunch/brunch/a full meal at one of the "cheaper" nice restaurants.
So far, via the NBC New York website, I've found a couple of places that are ranked highly that offer GCs. Daniel Boulud, Eleven Madison Park, Balthazar, etc. These restaurants are mostly in Manhattan, but a place in Brooklyn would be fine, too.
The Eleven Madison Park GC can also be used the following restaurants: Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Tabla, Blue Smoke & Jazz Standard, Shake Shack, The Modern, Cafe 2, Terrace 5, and Maialino.
If choosing from the places mentioned above, where would you want a $100-150 GC to? Do you have any other suggestions?
Or...Is this whole thing a bad idea, since we can't afford a $300+ GC?
Is this a good source for restaurant rankings/reviews? If not, do you have a better one?
Re: XP: Foodies, Help a DC Nestie buy a restaurant gift cert (kinda long!)
I think it's a great idea! As you said, it may not cover the entire bill. It may, however, enable them to order a nice bottle of wine and order something a little more decadent.
What kind of food do they like? Perhaps we can make a recommendation for a restaurant to try or look here for some suggestions: Visiting NYC? Read this first!. I have never used that website you posted. You may also want to look at Yelp or Zagat's for some suggestions. Keep in mind most restaurants, even if they don't advertise it, will gladly offer some sort of gift card or certificate.
