Re: (@) TMI question for all moms

  • I can't answer, but I asked this same question of my sister (thanks to Scrubs for putting this new worry in my head).  She said she did and was told everyone does.  She also said they told her in advance she would not know....she said "that is bull-I knew yet I did not care by this point".

  • Mine was a scheduled c-section, so no.

SIL was 100% natural (meaning no epidural--not by choice), and she didn't poop during labor.

  • Funny, I was just thinking about this today and realizing that I have no idea if I did or not. I had an epidural and literally could not feel a thing (I couldn't even move one of my legs). Pushing itself was SO hard because I had no idea if I was even doing it. The upside, of course, is that I felt nothing when the baby was coming out, just pressure, no pain (YAY!). But I have no clue if I uh, voided at all. I don't think DH would tell me if I did because he knows it would embarass me.

I don't think I did, because (ew sorry) I didn't smell anything, and after almost 24 hours without eating, I was smelling EVERYTHING.

Trust me, it is really the furthest thing in the world from your mind at that point. I promise. By then you will totally not care one bit.

  • Personally I had a c-section so no I didn't. But in all the childbirth talk I have had with friends & family over the years I have never had of them tell me they did. I actually have never heard of this happening during childbirth but I could see where it could.
  • Okay, now I am even more worried that my sister is a little weird!  Ahh! Smile In all seriousness, my friend who is a nurse said it is probably 50/50 of those that do or do not.  He stated they never tell the woman and just wisk away the pad that is placed there for the woman.

  • I just asked DH, "Do women poop during vaginal delivery?"

    "Some do."

    "Did you see it?"

    "Yeah."

    "Is it gross?"

    "No."

He then went on to say that it's actually good when women do because it means they're pushing from the right part of their body (as opposed to their face/neck/arms).

  • Please believe me - your nurses and docs have seen much worse than a bit of poop.  If you do defecate - it will be wisked away and you'll never even think about it.

PSA - it is the same with pregnant women who worry about getting waxed for the big day.

  • don't worry about it.

I had a c-section. I was awake for it (that was freaky)...the anestheologist (sp?) was up at my head, everybody else was at the other end of the bed.

At one point she said to me, "we're reaching a point here where people vomit. It's OK. Just turn to the right..." and I did... and I puked there on the surgery floor.

She said, "see, I told you it would be OK."

After DD was out, when they were closing me back up, she said, "OK, we're going to reach the point where people vomit again. Turn right."

It was so odd - she knew it was coming, warned me, and it was actually fine - it was like it was part of the procedure.

    Sorry if this is TMI...

    it's the honest truth!

    it's the honest truth!

That makes me wonder how my next is going to be.  Anytime I told them I felt like I was going to vomit, they stuck something else in my IV.  This happened 3 or 4 times, and I never actually puked.  I wonder if I wouldn't have felt so drugged up if they just let me puke instead?

  • I ended up having an emergency c-section after hours of labor and no epidural.  Like TTT said, after that and all the other stuff that comes out, poop is nothing.

And that's weird about the vomiting during c-sections. I never heard that and I didn't feel any nausea.  I will admit I was absolutely terrified of the procedure though so maybe I was too freaked to notice nausea.

  • I had a terrible case of diarrhea while in labor with my first but everything happened while sitting on the toilet.  By the time I gave birth, I had nothing left in me.

With my second, I'm not certain, but I suspect that I did.  Just as I went into hard labor, I developed terrible gas, and as the PP said, when pushing properly, you feel as though you are trying to go to the bathroom.

  • I had an emerency c-section, so no.  I also didn't vomit but they gave me a medication to prevent me from doing so.

  • I've never given birth, but I always ask friends this questions (ones I'm close to, not just randoms!). A lot of them have pooped during labor but said that the nurses /docs are so used to it happening that the clean it up right away.

I have warned H that this might happen so he's prepared.

  • I asked my best friend this, even though I don't want children, I was curious.  She said she did, but she didn't realize it, the only reason she knew was she asked her hubby.

Unlike TTT, she doesn't get embarrassed about stuff like that, so her husband told her.

  • it seems like its one of those "if there is something to come out - its coming out", kwim? And lots of women are in there for many many hours so even if you didn't have to poo when you came into the hospital you might have to by the time you push.

Don't some women realize they are in labor because they feel an incredible need to push from the ass region?

ROTFLMAO!!  I have often described both of my labors as feeling like the world's worst case of intestinal distress.  It's just this enormous pressure in your nether regions that is so strong, you can't tell whether it's your hoo-hoo, your ass, or the whole mess of it.

  • THis thread is hilarious!  Honestly, I was so worried about this too, but I didn't.  I still run the water when I go to the bathroom so that people won't hear me, so I am UBER self conscious about  this sort of thing.       Embarrassed

TTT is right though, it is the furthest thing from your mind.  I hadn't eaten in hours though, so I don't see how it would have been possible anyway.  Big Smile

    ?

lol! When they settled me in the labor & delivery room, the nurse was showing me the bathroom and said "Now, this is only for peeing. If you feel like you have to poop, call me. Don't try to go in there, because it might be the baby instead." ?

    ?

and lol kristen - I do that too! I am really self-conscious about stuff like that, so trust me, bunny, if even I can forget about it then you will be OK.?

  • Yay, I'm glad to hear all of this!  I know, I'm ridiculous.  I know the pain will be awful, the needles will be scary, the tearing sounds upsetting, but this is my big fear.
