compost question

I have a large trash can that I have put holes in and made into a compost bin. The compost usually has an earthy smell to it, but sometimes when it rains the contents get overly moist and the pile will stink. When I drain the water out of it and it dries up, the compost smells earthy again. Is this typical? When it gets wet and sits, it REALLY stinks.

Re: compost question

  • Do you have a lid on it? We always keep the lid on and the lid doesn't have holes in it. Or maybe you need more holes. Either way, you shouldn't have to drain it. It is typical that it stinks when waterlogged, but you should try to make it not get waterlogged.

  • I usually just add more browns and turn it several times after it rains heavily. Within a day or two it isn't as sloppy.

  • Ditto PP.  Drill more holes, put a lid on, and add more browns.  That should take care of the smell.

  • Ok, cool. I just wasn't sure if the smell ment that I should throw it away or if it was something I could save. Thanks guys.

  • As long as you're not putting meat or oil in there (both composting no-no's), the smell is just an inbalance between the nitrogren (greens) and carbon (browns) in your pile.  If you even out the balance, the smell will go away.
