Let's say you have this side creative job that you want to make "official" by giving it a name/branding...like an Etsy shop or photography business, etc.
So you do some brainstorming and come up with something you think sounds good and fits you well. Then you hit the internet. In your research, you discover that someone else, several states away, is using that exact name for their small business. The type of business is the same, but there's no way that their services could overlap in terms of coverage area. However, this person already has the Web address you were hoping to secure.
Would you keep your original name, or start over and try to think of something else?
Re: Let's talk business names
I was involved with a non-profit and we got a C&D letter from a company that had the same name several states away. Once they learned about our group they were impressed and gave us $1,000 to cover the expenses of changing our name.
I would say go with something different.
They only own .com, but I am picky and won't do a URL that isn't a .com so I'd have to think of some way to shorten the name of the online address.
If I mentioned that I don't plan for this to be nationwide business - just some way for me to put a name on a service people are already paying me for - would that make a difference? I just want to establish some sort of branding so people can go to a Web site and easily see my work and what I could do for them.
Also, part of the reason why I am so attached to the original name is that it's, well, part of MY name, so I feel like I have ownership of it already, hehe.
I hear what you all are saying, though, I do. I appreciate the feedback thus far.
Something different. No question.
Some girl calling herself khollyphoto just started following me on twitter. Every time I see her in my feed I want to slap the b!tch.
