So we're on the hunt for a new laptop! But we have no idea what brand we want or where to look. So tell me about what you have!
What brand is your laptop?
Pros/Cons?
Where did/would you look for a new laptop? (stores or online?)
Any brands you would stay away from?

Re: Laptop Poll
I have a mac!
iBook (the equivalent would now be a MacBook)
I love everything about it. It's very well made and I've had no problems at all with it. It's 5 years old and I still use it as my main computer. I've had to update the ram and memory (back when I bought it 80G hard drive seemed like SO much).
I don't have anti virus software, and I've never had a virus.
Macs are SO user friendly once your used to them.
Any brands you would stay away from? Uh, PC's?
I wholeheartedly agree with Tavia. Overall, the Macs I've worked with have lived much longer than any PC I've owned, and they seem to be faster and more efficient.
I've had bad experiences with HP and Dell. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad at work and it is AWFUL. I've had problems with the machines being very slow, non-responsive, broken hinges, etc. I wouldn't say I'm rough on my computer either, but it does have some miles on it. I would never buy a PC for personal use again.
I have had extremely bad luck with Dell so I would stay away from those.
We have a Toshiba that we got at Best Buy that we really like. We did have some virus issues (my fault, not Toshiba's) and Best Buy was really great about getting us fixed.
I've got a Gateway from HSN - 500GB, Windows 7, has one of those new Intel Core processors that have the commercials out on them right now...I love it. It works SO much better now that it's got Windows 7 on it...Vista was a PITA.
My dad has a Dell and loves it, but his was custom-built and ridiculously expensive. I think I'm going to stick with the Gateways for awhile, and I'm sure we'll be moving up to Macs later on this fall or in the spring. I'd recommend either of those two.
Putting my .02 in for Toshiba also. We bought one a year and a half ago and have not had any problems with it.
This exactly. I reluctantly switched to Mac back in 2007 when the program I was in at OU required them, and I have never looked back since! Between my husband and I, all in all we've owned 2 iMacs, 2 MacBook Pros (what I'm on right now), 2 MacBooks, iPad, iPods and all kinds of other Mac things. Like the above poster said, I've also never had a virus or need for anti-virus software. The only reason we had more than one was because my husband has an obsession with updating his technology. Silly engineer.
I have a Toshiba at home and a HP at work. H has a Compaq. My sister has a Dell that I use often. I hate to say this, but the Compaq is by far my favorite. I used to be very pro-Toshiba and was pissed when H came home with a Compaq that he purchased without me. Now, the Toshiba is collecting dust in the other room. I love the Compaq. It is so much faster, lighter, and has an amazing screen. The Toshiba is so heavy and gets way too hot sitting on my lap. My screen isn't half as bright as the Compaq either. I hate using my sisters Dell because the touch pad sucks and I really hate the HP because I just think it's a bad computer overall. I would check out bhphotovideo.com for good laptop prices.
I've been happy with my Dell, except for a few issues related to Windows Vista. It's over 3 years old now and still going strong. I use a HP at work and haven't had any issues with it either.
I'm a Dell girl. I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that I've had for about 5 years now and it still runs wonderfully. I did have a USB port issue, but I called Dell and it was under warranty so they fixed it for free.
If you are considering a Dell, check out their website. They run great deals and if you're a student they give great discounts to students.
The bottom line (to me at least) is to consider what you are going to be using it for. Macs and PCs both have their advantages and their disadvantages. Macs are great for multimedia type applications and PCs tend to work better with more business type applications. Whatever you get make sure you check it out on Consumer Reports or PC Mag or something to get some other reviews and feedback. Oh and shop around to get the best deal. Good luck!!

Thanks for the suggestions! Although we would love to have Mac someday, we decided on a PC since we're both used to PCs and they're a little cheaper.
We were really torn between Dell and Toshiba, but we finally decided on a Toshiba since we haven't heard/read any bad reviews about them (unlike Dell). Ugh, I never realized how stressful Laptop shopping could be! I'm so glad it's over! And now I can hopefully start posting more
