s/o: fruits & a healthy diet

I was talking to a guy who works with the gym I work out at. This guy has a small business where you can sign up and buy meals from him. They're all fresh and really healthy (obv.). He only recommends eating his food 3-4 times a week because he feels so strongly that people need to learn how to eat healthy in the real world. I really agree with him on that one.

Well anyways, so I was chatting with him and another lady who is one of his clients. She asked him what his stance is on fruit consumption. Well this guy goes on to say that since fruit has so much natural sugar in them that turn into fat if you don't burn them off, he recommends only eating fruit on the days you work out and never in the evenings.

Ok... so I suppose I understand his point. There are a lot of natural sugars in fruits and some veggies also. BUT on the other hand, isn't it better to eat an apple as opposed to a Snickers?? I mean, I would rather see someone sit down and have a banana then eat those 100 calorie packs of cookies or something. At least the banana is real food. (I do love those 100 calorie cookies though! Zip it!)

I know that our understanding of food & how it effects our minds & bodies is always changing, but I have recently come across many people kind being... "anti-fruit" and I think that's just as bad as eating too much of anything else. Everything in moderation, right?

Re: s/o: fruits & a healthy diet

  • I don't agree with this guy at all.  Fruit is amazing...and yes I'd rather see someone eating a banana rather than a Snickers.  But to each his own.  What does he recommend you eat then instead of fruit?

  • I have a friend who trains and does body competitions and has to do some crazy eating/diet type programs.  She will tell you that berried are the best (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries).  Apples are good.

Banana's are really bad for you.  And citrus fruits arn't that good.

Now what she means when she gives me this advice is what to avoid, what to eat and what to eat in moderation.  At the end of the day...fruit is better than a processed food though.

  • Interesting... ITA it's better to eat a piece of fruit than a snickers bar any day.  I understand that what he's saying probably has some science behind it, but I think it overall comes down to what your goals are.

If you are in hardcore fat-loss, muscle-building mode, then maybe that makes sense.  However, I think (and know from personal experience) that if your goal is a slow, manageable weight-loss that fits in with a general healthier lifestyle, then you should be fine eating fruit.  And of course, everything in moderation.  You can eat apples and oranges all day, but you still need to fit in some veggies somewhere.

  • I think he wants you to eat veggies and lean protein instead? I don't know. I just think that telling someone to not eat fruit is like a huge red flag and no-no for your everyday person just trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Exactly.  I agree 100%.  If you want to loose weight fast or are training for something is more what I was speaking to.  But for a slow, healthy managable weight loss it is definately best to include fruit.

  • fruits and veggies will always be a healthier alternative to processed/junk foods. as a personal trainer - i cannot give actual dietary/nutrition advice to my clients because i'm not a licensed nutritionist. if that guy isn't, either, he's not supposed to be dishing out dietary advice.

people - especially men - in training for a body contest and things like that have...odd...diets compared to the rest of us. before i became a trainer, the man i learned from came up with a "diet" for me to get in shape for the wedding. in no way, shape or form was it realistic for someone like me, who works in an office 8 hours/day, etc. but it was a very high protein/veggie type diet.

it's basically, like all the PPs said, to each their own. although i will say i disagree wholeheartedly that bananas are bad for you. bananas contain three natural sugars (sucrose, fructose and glucose) combined with fiber - it gives and instant and sustained energy boost. Research also shows that two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90 minute workout. They are also one of the best sources of potassium and a great source of soluble fiber.

This!  I think bananas get a bad wrap sometimes b/c since they are such a binding fruit some people have a hard time digesting them.  Me being one of these people, I still love and eat them in moderation :)

LMFAO - I just read my post again, and i sound like a banana know it all. i don't even like them, but i make myself eat one before boot camp since i sweat so much and it's hotter than hades outside. i like the flavor of bananas, but not the texture. so i often make a smoothie with a banana, ice, skim milk, vanilla, and protein or flaxseed.
