Valarie (like Malaria but with a V)

Joaureneay (Journey)

Shan'Detric-Lamar

I didn't meet these 2 so I have no idea how to pronounce them.

Re: It's time for another

  • wow. Indifferent poor kids. All of them are crazy, but the last two are ridiculous.
  • It ends up looking like the parents are uneducated and don't know how to spell.

I have a new coworker named "Sadae".  She's gotten everything from Sadie to Saw-day to Shaw-day (which I think is how you actually pronounce it...no one is still quite sure).

    Poor kids!

  • You'll definitely have to give us an update with how to pronounce those last two!
  • Damn. Poor souphaphone is destined to be overweight and play the tuba because I have a strong feeling that's what his/her mom was going for with that name but didn't bother to look up the spelling. :(

I don't have too many youneek names among my college students (which probably says something in and of itself) but most of the few who do have one-of-a-kind names generally go by other names. Valaria will someday just be "Val", Shan'Detric-Lamar will just ask  me to call him "Lamar," and Joaureneay will someday go by her middle name, "Ann"

  • Spechal (like Special)

    Bliss

    Taujanick (tah-wah-nick?)

(First boy name) Smallwood (not his fault, not theirs...just a bad last name for a boy)

My sister once advised a person named Precious Love.

  • My ghetto, cracked-out older half-sister named her first child Destiny Hope.   Which is bad enough, but her last name was Bible.  Destiny Hope Bible.  Why, why, why....

My niece was killed in car accident about 2 years ago with her meth-head mother behind the wheel.  She just recently had another child out of wedlock and was crushed when we informed her it would be in bad taste to name her newborn daughter Destiny Hope.  ::pause for reaction::  So then she was just going to name her Hope... No middle name.  Still don't know if she ever gave her a middle name.

    High five.

  • I don't have anything like that with my advisees this year...well, I lied. One kid's first name was Baby. Oi.

    Those names are...wow.

No joke. I knew a guy older than me name William (went by Willy) Smallwood. His name didnt have an effect on him since he was one of the populat guys in my HS.

But seriously, what is wrong with people??? Allison you need to let us know how you pronounce those last two. Those are beyond crazy.

  • Those are really, really bad.  Makes Axel sound normal!  Haha

  • One of my friend's relatives recently had a baby and named her....

Gabardine Corduroy.  And they call her Tarren for short.  WTF?

As for Bliss, I went to school with a girl named Bliss and now I don't think anything of it.  I guess it is unusual, but I put it more in the Hope/Faith category... somewhat of a hippy name, but it works.

As for Baby, I can't stand that name!  One of my friends goes by the nickname of Baby, which I think is embarrassing and ridiculous considering she's a grown woman (although she doesn't act like it).  Can you imagine being an old woman and people still call you Baby?  Weird.

  • wow.  those are bad.  really really bad.

  • Those are just wrong. What is the world coming to?  I'd be very intrested to hear how those last two are pronounced.

Reminds me of a headline I just read.  The chick in the article is named Sparkle Ring.  WTF?

We just saw her mugshot on the news! Talk about setting your daughter up for a life on the pole...

  • Um wow....I'm speechless.

Here's my list, but you definitely win this year:

-Nevaeh...yep, Heaven spelled backward.  When did that become the "in" thing?

    -Jetty...seriously?

-Camry and Liberty....not totally horrible, but different.

    -Donya...pronounced Don-yay

    -Adriace

    -Halen

    -Saylee

-Angel...I honestly don't like saying her name because it sounds like a pet name or something, weird.
At least I can pronounce all of these, looking at Allison's list makes me grateful Big Smile
  • Those names are awful. In saying that, I taught an Italian girl *it is actually a common Italian name* named Valeria (like Malaria with a 'v')
    Vacation
  • My uncle's name is Bliss, so it didn't really strike me as too terribly odd.

My mom had a student a couple years ago named Silver Penny. Silver had a little brother. Want to take a stab at his name? Yeah. Uh huh. Copper. Copper Penny.

I was going to ask if it was an Italian name. My dad's family is Italian, and my maiden name is very similar.

  • Oh, and those are some crazy names!!!

  • My class rosters are pretty boring. Tearrssa, Cheyene (with one n?), and a boatload of Dakotas. Oh, and a Montana. Great Plains state names must have been big in the 90's.

I had 3 Dakotas last year and 1 Montana the year before.

Cheyene with one n is weird...the daughter of a friend of ours has the middle name Savanah, with one n.  I think that's weird too and just looks like they didn't know how to spell Savannah lol

They said Spechal was a family name, too. We've had a Montana and a Dakota at our school, too!
