*sala* NE1 who knows about school assgn. in wake

So we are looking at buying a house less than 1 mile away from current residence. Our assigned elementary school now is about 1 mile away, & there are 2 more in a 2 mile radius. Yet, moving would put our base elementary school 10 miles away- what the HELL!? How hard is it, is it possible, to get E changed to one of the 3 schools that would save us like 45 min commute every day?! freakin' ridiculous

  • It is crazy ridiculous to get her reassigned.
  • I don't know all of the particulars of the process, but many of my neighbors have gotten their kids reassigned to the elementary school that is closest to our neighborhood.  I know it isn't the simplest process, but it is definitely possible.  Also, with the new school board (and the unknown future of the board) you never really know when the assignments will change.  The current board is in favor of neighborhood schools which would probably (not always) assign your kids to the closest school to you.  However, there is MUCH opposition to this since it could re-segregate the schools.  Therefore, you never really know if and how the assignments are going to change in the next few years whether you stay in your current house or move a mile down the road.

Very late reply, SORRY!!!!!  The beginning of the school year has me swamped.  It's impossible at this point to know what's going to happen from year to year. I've discussed it with my principal and even he doesn't know much more than what you read online or in the papers.   It looks like the mover towards more community schools is going to happen, but in exactly what form who knows.  As for transfers they are hard to get, but can be done.  I've known several families who were intitially rejected but went through with the appeals process and got in.  Side note for any transfers parents are required to provide transportation, the county won't provide it.  I'll be glad to try and get you answers to any more questions you may have.

(and since you are thinking of staying in the same area...you definitely need to end up my school. Wink  It's the best in the area!  It's  an old building, but great environment)
