More Mosque stuff...

I love how I keep trying to get a good debate started on here, but with the exception of one or two "hit and run" lurkers...we are all peacefully in agreement about this issue :-)  You guys are the shiznit.

Anyway, here's my latest video clips for your perusal.

Sharif El-Gamal, the Park51 developer, talking about the project.  Not sure how any rational person could have a problem after listening to what this project really is, but hey - I referred a friend to it on FB yesterday, she called Mr. El-Gamal a lying terrorist and a friend of hers said the Muslims better watch out because they are going to get what is coming to them.....so....not everyone is rational, I guess??

Keith Olberman, basically just putting all the bigots in their place.  Brought me to tears, watch all the way to the end.

Re: More Mosque stuff...

  • The people that I know who are against it are opposed not because of religious reasons or the fear of a mosque so close to the WTC site. They do so because of the suspicion of funding from non-peaceful sources and because some of the members have been rumored to have ties to terrorist organizations. I can understand that rationale, as long as it's founded in truth.  If people are opposed merely because of rumor and conjecture, seems like there needs to be more concrete evidence for me to justify that opposition.

That's my feelings too - if you know all the facts and still are against it for a reason based in fact then, well, that's democracy and America and you are entitled to your opinions.  But the people who are spewing out this Islam-hate with no grasp on reality....I can't handle them.

Also in response to me posting the Sharif El-Gamal clip on FB yesterday, someone posted a cover of a magazine that had a picture of an Islamic girl with her nose cut off.  He said that this is what the Mosque developers were supporting and how could I be so crazy and stupid to think that they should be allowed to have a Mosque here.

Um....I don't think anyone in lower Manhattan is supporting cutting anyone's noses off.  I don't deny that there are extremist Muslims who do support "honor killings" and  horrible things like that...but there are also Catholic priests who molest children and the Church has known about it and covered it up for years.  Does that mean that all Catholics are child molesters? No.  Do all Muslims cut off their womens' noese?  No.

People are using this argument to spew venom and hatred about all Muslims in general, and turning this into an argument about whether Islam is accepted in America, rather than whether or not this location is ok for this community center.  The whole thing has gone beserk.

  • I agree with the both of you. I have a bunch of friends and family in Texas and Oklahoma that I sent the following link (below) to to calm them down a bit. I think part of the issue is the media makes is sound like it's being built ON ground zero and not a couple blocks away and they just needed a visul. Now that I've given them that, they now sound more like bigots. It makes me feel like there's no pleasing them. I can't wait to share with them the links you just posted. :)

On another note... I feel like some of them just doing get it because they have a one track mind. Most people I know in NYC really don't care either way. Oh well.
