What do I do with...

almost a whole pack of bc pills that I'm not taking anymore? As some of you may remember my doc switched my pills a couple weeks ago. Well I had taken 2 pills of a brand new pack when my doc switched me. She told me to just start taking the new pills, don't worry about the old ones. Now my question is, what do I do with the old pills? Do I throw away the whole pack? Flush the pills down the toilet? Or keep them in case of an emergency? What do you girls think?

Re: What do I do with...

  • I just throw away any old pills I have. No point in keeping them in case of an emergency, because if you run out of your current prescription and start taking those, you have to use other forms of protection anyway since the pills aren't exactly effective when you first switch.

  • Don't flush them. The fishies and frogs, and all those lovely things are affected badly. :(
  • Yeah I agree with PPs, just toss them in the trash.
  • Thanks girls!

  • Yeah definitely don't flush! I don't get why people do that.

You flush them so that no one can use the drugs later. This is mainly important if it's something with abuse potential, like pain killers or anti-anxiety drugs.A lot of drugs don't get metabolized and end up going down the toilet after you take them, so it's just like flushing them before they go threw your body.

BC isn't going to get abused, so you can just toss them. You could also call your local pharmacy to see if they have a disposal program. The general rule is that prescriptions are good for 1 year after you get them, so they probably wouldn't even be useful if you kept them.

  • I agree with PP.  Take them out of the pack, mix them with coffee grounds or something like that and toss in the trash.  Also remember to remove your label from the pack and distroy that info too.

  • Even with something with potential for abuse I don't think you should be flushing that down the toilet. Sure get it away from whoever might abuse it but putting it in the water system is probably not the best way to go about it.

    This.

  • You can toss them or some communities have places where you can drop off your old prescriptions on OTC drugs and they will incinerate them.
