So i jinxed myself. i just telling my CW about the long-drawn out process of getting new appliance. I said that our stove is actually in good shape so that is the bottom of our list. I probably shouldn't have said it. I keep the oven door locked at all times so the kids can't open it. Well I tried opening yesterday and couldn't get the door open. The lock is stuck! Brian tried for an hour yesterday to free it.
We are finding that coil stoves are harder to find. I'm a little leery of the flat top stoves (glass, cermamic type). I've heard they can be hard to clean and can scratch easy.
What is your opinion on them?
Re: Stove/Ovens
Oh no! Can you call an appliance person in to fix the lock? Maybe you don't need a new oven- maybe you just need a new lock!
My parents have a flat glass top stove and my inlaws have a flat ceramic top one. I prefer the ceramic one for cooking (seems to conduct heat better), but it does seem harder to clean than my parents' glass one. Burnt on foods require a special cleaner to get off on the ceramic top, but on my parents glass one you just wipe it right off with a wet cloth.
We have gas in our apartment and I LOVE it. Is that an option for you? Heats so fast and so evenly.

We just replaced a Saran-top stove, and it was okay. I'm not a big fan of electric cooktops in general, so that may be my personal bias. I didn't have a hard time cleaning it, but I did scratch it some. I think my cast iron cookware was the culprit though, and I wasn't that diligent in picking it up (and not dragging it across the glass).
Happily, we were changing some of the appliances out, and got a gas cooktop. It only cost about $200 to change over from electric to gas.
My MIL has had a Saran-top for 12 years, and it looks like new.
FYI-- Whirlpool still makes the coil stoves... Email me.
I must be an odd ball that hates cooking with gas. Maybe if I was more inot cooking I would prefer a gas stove.
Gas stoves scare the beejeesus out of me. I agree that they cook better, but they don't work well with me.
I have a glass cooktop, and i'm happy with the maintenance on it.
