Tell me it'll be ok
I just need to whine a bit.
Background- I needed my wisdom teeth out 5 years ago. However, the day before the surgery, I was informed my insurance wasn't going to pay for it all and since I was in college I couldn't afford it, so I only got one out. At that time, they were all impacted and the oral surgeon would have preferred they all come out.
Fast forward to 5 years later. I have been dealing with headaches and toothaches, etc. for too long and been putting this off so I decided it's time to go in. I had my consultation today and find out I screwed myself by waiting so long. Only one of the 3 that need to come out is a normal wisdom tooth removal. I have one that is up in my sinus cavity and depending on how close up there it really is, there's a slim chance my bottom part of my mouth/face could be numb forever. That is kind of a silly thing, but still annoying. However, my other wisdom tooth is way down near my jaw bone. Of course the doctor can't tell if it is in it, around it, or just near it from the x-ray, but regardless it is too d@mn close to it. Because of this, I run a very high risk of my jaw bone breaking during the surgery. Then, if he actually gets it out with no problem, the hole will be so deep that it takes 4 weeks to heel, so if I so much get popped in the face by my dog, my jaw bone could break.
Has this ever been the case for anyone? I really liked the oral surgeon and he was really awesome explaining everything, but now, I'm scared. I really don't want my jaw bone to break. He said I will have to eat soft, mushy foods for 4 weeks because if I even eat a chip, that's too tough that could break my jaw bone.
Someone please tell me this happened to them (not the breaking, just the risk!). Tell me I'm a baby and will be just fine.

Okay, I'm really not that unsympathetic but wanted you to hear what you wanted.
I'm so sorry that it's going to be such a big deal. I've only had one wisdom tooth removed for the exact same reason so I totally understand putting it off. I appreciate your sharing this because it might be the kick in the butt I need to get mine checked out. (I know that wasn't your intention but still...)
I don't blame you for being nervous about it, I would be too. BUT, it sounds like you have a great surgeon. They wouldn't suggest something for you that would be too dangerous. Also, I definately think that after going through a surgery like this you'll deserve tons of special treatment from your hubby/friends/family. Good luck.

Owwwww..... Sorry to hear you will be going through this. I was fortunate to have my impacted wisdom teeth taken out in the 10th grade.
When you oral surgeon tells you not to eat anything more than shakes, please listen to him. My co-worker's wife had her teeth pulled and was told the same thing. She broke her jaw eating a chip and spent 3 months with her mouth wired shut because she kept breaking it. That one chip caused so many problems.

ditto the 2nd opinion. my neighbor works for dr. flaggert and I've only heard good things about him - he's off of 183/duval. here are some reviews, sounds like everyone really likes him. MH saw him for a consult and was impressed, the dr. ended up telling him he didn't need whatever someone else had told him.

Who's your doctor? I saw Dr. Karasomethingoranother in Westlake with a similar situation and he did a GREAT job!
I also put it off for quite a few years too many. It had affected me so much, I could only my mouth a few millimeters!

I got a lot of the same stuff ... you may not be able to feel your face, you waited too long and it's too close to your jaw, etc etc.
However, now I am SO SO SO thankful I finally did it! Recovery wasn't too bad. Take whatever pain medicine you can, follow the doctor's orders and you'll be fine
It took the hole about 8 weeks to heal, but after the first week it was almost routine to have a hole there, haha.
Within the first few days, you'll feel SO much better having them out of your mouth! In two weeks you'll be checking in here telling us how glad you are to have that behind you, and how much better your whole head feels!
You will be fine, but I certainly suggest a 2nd opinion. I know there are many great oral surgeons out there, and I will recommend mine as well. Dr. Horne took my wisdom teeth out (but I had no complications) and I actually look back on that whole thing as a good memory lol.

I know it's scary and I'm sorry you're going through this, but I'm sure everything is going to be okay. I second getting a second opinion. You might feel more comfortable with the other surgeon.
I saw the title of your post and held my breath when I opened it because of your DH heart surgeries.
Agree with pp on getting a second opinion- nothing bad can come of a second opinion and if you like the first guy better you can go back to him. I need to have my wisdom teeth removed too, I'm putting it off right now though while we are TTC. That's kind of just an excuse though, I really should get it done

I didn't even think about that, sorry! He is alive and well for the most part. I think I just have to get used to him being "broken" all the time!

WOW! So since yours sounds similar. My doctor said the one tooth takes about 4 weeks to heel and to eat soft foods for 4 weeks. Did your surgeon tell you 8 weeks and did you only eat soft stuff for 8 weeks? I'll eat liquids for the rest of the year if it means I don't break my jaw!
