Best way to clean hard wood floors?

My floors used to be so shiny and pretty until I used mop n glow.  I got the kit with the mop with the stick on pad and the solution and it pretty much ruined my floors I think because the pad gets too much water in it.  Now my floors look dingy and have water spot stains on them.  Any suggestions?

I got a wring out mop so I can get it very dry and some murphy's oil cleaner to try?  I just want my pretty floors back!  TIA.

  • We just had our floors touched up (not quite refinished) and the guy who did it recommended Bona floor cleaner.  It comes with a swiffer-esque mop that you can wash and reuse.  So far it's worked well for us.  GL!

ETA:  He recommended not using Murphy's because it could leave a residue.

  • Yikes, Mop 'n Glo on hardwoods...I've never used it on hw but I've seen what it can do to linoleum so I can only imagine. I'm sorry you had an issue. I also never use Murphy's on my hw because of the residue issue. It will be especially bad on top of your current situation. I second the suggestion of the Bona system. It's really not expensive, the starter kit is about $20 at HD/Lowes and comes with a dust mop, wet mop, and spray solution. They also have a treatment product that can be used to shine your h/w floors.

You might need to find something that will strip the MNG off the wood before you proceed. I'm sure there are products that will remove it and not damage the floors, but you should do some research first.

    Good luck!

  • I just recently got into green cleaning and honestly...A gallon bucket of water and a couple of small squirts of dish soap works wonders and doesn't make the floor sticky.  Just make sure the water isn't really hot to avoid warping!  If it's good enough to clean what you eat on, it's good enough to clean what you stand on right?
