Bulk Soil

Joe and I need some bulk soil (2-3 yards).  It's obviously easiest if they deliver, but we don't want to pay a ton in delivery fees for dirt.  Besides Gertens, any suggestions?  We live in Bloomington and don't want to go too far out of our part of the metro.

ETA: We like Gertens and will most likely buy our dirt there if we can't find someone to deliver good dirt for cheap.  We just would prefer to not have to pick it up, and we don't want to pay $100 for dirt delivery.

Re: Bulk Soil

  • I see ads for it on Craigslist all the time.

  • Craigslist.

Also, we may have a bunch after this weekend, we're digging down an elevated garden into lawn. I'll know more after Saturday. You'd be welcome to it.

  • Does anyone have a recommendation for someone they have actually used?  A coworker got some "inexpensive, good quality dirt" on craigslist and it ended up being the sandiest, junkiest dirt ever.  They dropped it off and although she took one look at the dirt and refused it, they dumped it anyway, and now she has a pile of sandy, rocky soil in her driveway.  :(  We have a daunting project that requires a lot of dirt, I don't want to get soil that will end up creating more work in the long run.

Dawn - thank you for the offer.  We need a lot of dirt, I doubt your garden dirt would be enough.  1 yard of dirt equals roughly 27 wheelbarrows, supposedly, and we most likely need 2-3 yards of dirt.

  • When my roommate and I tried to fill in the dug out area from an above ground pool, we were getting estimates of $2000 for the dirt & delivery.  We ended up going to the county compost site with a truck we rented from u-haul.  The compost was 'clean', although they also had black dirt.  And You shouldn't tell the different between the two, other than the dirt was a little darker.  No smell or anything.  The truck rental was $29 for the day and it had a bedliner that we could use the shovel on and then just spray off with a hose.  The compost was about $8 a yard.

Well, so far we've moved 15 wheelbarrows, and there's more to move. It's a big, high garden, but no matter to me :)

this is a great idea too, I know Ramsey has one.
  • I work for a construction company and always have to call around for prices on sand and dirt. Just call the closest landfill or concrete dump site and ask for black dirt and delivery charges, it shouldn't be too expensive. My company sells it for $6/yard.
