What to bring to soccer potluck at park?

I can NOT think this a.m., I need help. My son?s soccer team has a tourney this weekend and on Sat since the games are far apart and the park is far away, they want to do a potluck. I am late to the party, people have already signed up for fruit, veggies, drinks, turkey dogs (in crock pot) with condiments and buns, chips and forks/plates/napkins. What the heck do I bring? I am thinking small sandwich roll sandwiches ? turkey & ham with cheese slices, lettuce and tomatoes on the side. But sounds like too much to put together for a bunch of 11 yr old boys. Any other ideas? These people frown at sweets, so no dessert. Oh, maybe something with carbs...kid friendly.

TIA for the great ideas!

  • what about some sort of easy pasta you can make in a big batch?  spaghetti?  mac and cheese?

    i don't think the sandwiches would be too hard to put together for the kids either - or maybe you could assemble them all ahead of time, and the kids can take out the veggies they don't want (would that be too wasteful?)

  • I'm sure mac salad or a pasta salad is already being brought?  You mentioned fruit... hmm, what about fruit shish-kabobs? Or fruit on a stick?  Kind of fun?  You could always buy the fruit pre cut up at Costco?  Otherwise I think you have a great idea on the mini sandwiches.

    Who doesn't love bbq meatballs?! Perfect.

    Well... then, who doesn't love sweets. I think I'd turn their frown upside down with homemade cookies. They only get better if they in the sun for a little while. I'd do choc chip... but, you could do oatmeal so it seems healthy... or oatmeal choc chip... fool the adults into thinking their little athletes are eating raisins.

    Bahahahaha I was going to suggest this too! My sweet tooth is out in full force today. Big Smile But I don't know if you're allowed to bring something sugary? If not, I think either Jaime's meatball idea or the sandwiches would be fine.

  • I am LOL because one of the 'new' mom's responded that she will be bringing desserts and 4 other 'better than her' moms replied and they were totally lecturing her and LOUDLY declaring their stand against sweets.  They are killing me!  I feel so bad for her, and yes, I came to her defense.  I don't know if she will bring her desserts, but, in solidarity, I responded that I will be bringing ice cream sandwiches for after the second game and  I decided to do a wrap sandwich platter for the potluck.  It's not like any of the kids are overweight, treats are fine in moderation.  This is club soccer, these boys train twice per week, scrimmage a lot and play on the weekends.  These are NOT sedentary children that don't expend any energy!

    :::applauding:::

    I'm all for kids eating healthy and teaching them to make good choices about food - but for active children, there's NOTHING wrong with the occasional sweet treat! Oh, and I loooooove me some ice cream sandwiches. Big Smile

  • I am all about the ice cream sandwiches AND because the dessert mom has now emailed all of us saying she will bring plates, napkins, forks, I responded that I will be bringing donuts and coffee in the morning.  I know I am pissing off the uptight moms, but I hope there a few others that will play along tomorrow morning and shove donuts to their boys.  I can't wait!
