Anyone have a Kindle?

I kind of want one but I am just not sure! I love books too much so I am afraid that reading on a screen will just kill the whole reading feeling. And, are buying the books for Kindle really any cheaper than buying them in the store? At the same time, I can definitely see the positives. For one, I brought a few paperbacks with me on the HM, they were brand new when I left but due to being packed up, they are now bent and dented. And, I am just about to finish the 3rd book of the Sookie Stackhouse series and went to buy the 4th yesterday but couldn't find it! With the Kindle, I could just download it right when I needed it. So, as you can see I am completely undecided so if anyone has any experience with one, please let me know how you like it!

Re: Anyone have a Kindle?

  • I don't have a Kindle, but just looking at books quickly on Amazon, it seems like the Kindle prices are equal to or more than the mass market or trade paperback version of the book.  Eat Pray Love was a little less than trade price.  One for the Money (Stephanie Plum series) was the same as the mass market price. Which seems silly, because you aren't paying to print the paper and bind it!

It seems so convenient and "green" to get one of these, but I buy most of my books secondhand anyway (unless I am dying to read something new or popular!), so I get most books for less than $5.00.  I also noticed they don't have, for example, books by our local, yet very widely read, author on Kindle.

And nothing can replace the feel of a book in my hands and the smell of the ink on the pages.

Plus, what if you dropped it in the bathtub? ;)

  • I have a B&N Nook, which is quite comparable to the Kindle, and I had some of the same concerns before I got it about the "book" feeling, but I don't even notice at all that it isn't a traditional book anymore. It doesn't really seem like it is a screen, either, since it isn't backlit and uses e-ink. It is just like reading a book page through a plastic-y film.

As for price on the unit -- both Kindle and B&N's cheapest version of their readers are wi-fi only, not 3G, which is fine if you are going to be downloading somewhere with wi-fi, but if you want books on the go, make sure you are getting one with 3G.

As far as pricing for books, I go through B&N, and depending on what you are reading it can be significantly cheaper, or about the same as the book. New releases and recent bestsellers seem to stay a little high on pricing, but it is usually substantially cheaper than buying a new hardback; if it is a book that has a paperback version sometimes it isn't as significant of a difference. There are some seriously cheap e-books out there, though, some are even free, but it really depends on what you want to read as to whether it will save you money. For me, it does save money since many of the books I read aren't bestsellers or very new.

Downloading is great and fast, and it's nice to carry around whatever books you want to read in a small(ish) device; I always keep mine with me. Before I got my nook, I was wishy-washy about getting an e-reader, but now that I have it, I can't imagine NOT having it. I love it, use it every day, and think it is one of the best gifts I've ever received.

Go to Target and check out the Kindle, or B&N to check out the Nook, and see if you like the feel of it. I think it's a great choice to get one, but ultimately a personal decision!

  • I have a nook!  I had the exact same concerns with perhaps not liking reading on a screen, so i was hesitant, but my husband took the plunge for me and got it for me for christmas last year.  I am so glad he did.  I absolutely love it, and I feel like it is actually easier to read on than most pages on a typical book.  I feel like I read a lot more now, too, because it is so accessible, easy to carry, easy to hold, etc.

ALSO if you go to the gym at all, it is really nice because it just sits flat on the screen and you can read while working out!  This is probably one of my favorite parts about it!

  • My mom has a Nook and I am really considering getting one as well.  ALl of her friends have them.  Apparently they did a lot of research on them and the Nook is actually a better/safer buy than the Kindle because Amazon still owns the rights to everything on the Kindle and they can shut it down permanently withough notifying you if something goes wrong payments wise.  But with the Nook you own everything on it.  I didn't totally understand but I think I'd go with the Nook for that reason.

  • I have one and I LOVE it!!  Actually, I've read all of the Sookie Stackhouse books on my kindle.  It is so nice to just click and buy the next one whenever you're ready.  I thought I would miss having actual books but, I really love that I can get a book whenever I want, and it takes like 30 seconds to download (I tend to finish books at odd hours in the night and can't wait to jump into the next one!  Plus, hate having to drive to the bookstore and wait in line-I'm very impatient).  It is also lighter than many books and I find it easier to hold.

    GL, HTH!

  • I love, love, love my Kindle! At first I wasn't sure how I would feel about not having a real book in my hands (the feel, the smell...you know), but after about 20 minutes of reading my Kindle, I was hooked. It's just so convenient to carry around with me, and I love being able to get new books at the touch of a button. I HIGHLY recommend the Kindle :-)

  • I had a nook...until it got stolen on my honeymoon :(

I did like it, but it didn't totally replace books for me. I really liked that it was small and easy to carry around. Great for trips or taking places where you will have to wait. I don't think I'll get another one right away though.
