It is so strange, I never come to this board but I saw the post below and then read your blog. We are going to Ocean Isle for the first time this weekend and I was wondering if you had any suggestions. The beach looks so nice, we are only going for 1 night though since my 18m old is going to be with us and we don't really like staying in hotels w/her. Any tips/suggestions you could give me would be great, I am not sure where we are staying, DH booked a condo I think.

Re: *Katie Bride*

  • I'm going to hijack the post if you don't mind...

We've always stayed on the "east" side of OI.  So, I only have recommendations for that area.  I'm sure you will spend most of your time on the beach.  However, there is a playground off of Halifax St. (If you come over the bridge headed into OI, right before you get to the round about, it's on your left)  DS loves that playground.

Cinelli's has pretty good sandwiches and pizza.  Sharky's is also good.  Those are the two main restaurants we eat at on the island.

If you go to the very east tip of the Island during low tide,  you can walk on the sand and see where the sound and ocean meet.  It's very pretty and not a lot of people are out there.  You can also go at high tide and see where the ocean is about to take away a few of the houses!  SCARY!

They have 2 ice cream shops there.  I think the tourist hit up the one on Causeway.  You can't miss it.  Coming over the bridge (headed into OI) before you get to the roundabout, it's on your right.   I think a lot of the locals eat at the ice cream place that serves Hershey ice cream.  This is located on E 1st street near the Surf shop.

A driving tip for you....if you are staying on the east side, and have to take a left onto 2nd street, go around the round about to get to your street.  That way, you are not sitting in the turn lane forever and a day waiting on traffic!  It will make sense if you see it.

Let me know if you have any more questions.  Have fun!!

  • you're going to love it and wish you had more time!

here's a tip ... you can't have beach tents on the beach anymore. they outlawed them for some stupid reason. so if you need shade, you'll have to have an umbrella instead. i found this link yesterday and it shows where all the turtle nests are right now. http://oceanislebeach.com/turtle-nest-hatches/we were there 5 years ago and saw one of them hatch which was pretty cool. we didn't do awhole lot of activities on the island, just the beach and pool. we went to Calabash twice for seafood dinner. have fun!

  • Thanks ladies, I haven't heard from DH, so I have no idea if he for sure booked it. I wanted to go for 2 nights. We do have an umbrella, so that is a plus. I guess if we like it we'll re book again for more nights after labor day, it was hard to get anything reasonable this weekend.
