Horse Races

I've never gone, and want to go to FL racetrack with a couple of friends in two weeks or so.  What should I know when I go?  I want to bring some $$ to bet on the horsies, how much is usually a good idea?  (I'm thinking I can afford to lose $30-50, is that too much/enough to play with?)

Any tips for a newbie?

Re: Horse Races

  • I have been to FL Racetrack many times, but haven't bet on horses in years...there's slot machines there too.  From what I remember, you only need to bet a few dollars $1-$3 on each race and there are at least 9+ races.
  • I've only gone to races in Saratoga but I assume they are the same.  Usually I just bet a Win, Place, Show box bet.  That's the horse that comes in first, second and third.  If you box it, you are just picking the 3 horses that will be the first 3 to cross the finish line, it doesn't matter the order, you just need to pick the 3 that cross first.

You can also just pick 1 horse to win or 2 horses to win, place.... there are lots of ways to bet.

If you bet on a WPS box above say $1 - it would be a $3 total bet since there are 3 places you are betting on, win, place and show.

The big gamblers will go for trifectas and whatnot - that's guessing the 3 horses that finish 1,2,3 in their exact order.  They also have superfectas and all sorts of craziness that is equal to winning the lottery if you can guess correctly and obviously is near impossible to do.

    Good luck!

  • If you bet an exacta or a trifecta always box it.  At Saratoga there are even 10 cent superfectas which when you box your four horses your whole bet is under $3.  Those are fun to do once in awhile.  Have Fun!!
  • What does it mean to "box" a bet?  I am reeeeeally new at this, haha!

  • If you box a trifecta bet it doesn't matter the order the horses come in.  Say you pick the 5,7 and 9 horses in the race.  It doesn't matter if the 5 horse comes in first, the 3 horses just need to be the first 3 to cross the finish line, in any order.  Basically you can win any of these ways:

    5,7,9

    9,7,5

    5,9,7

    9,5,7

    7,5,9

    7,9,5

If you don't box the horses then it has to be exact 5,7,9.
