Anonymous spiritual poll

I'm surprised how many of my high school friends on facebook declare their love of Jesus Christ daily. They never discussed it when I knew them. It made me curious about other people's religious/spiritual views. The poll is anonymous, but feel free to add comments if you'd like to share.

Re: Anonymous spiritual poll

  • I've attended both Jewish and Catholic schools (I'm neither), lived by a Shinto shrine and basically have a degree in folklore mythology (bonus points for the Simpsons' reference) and I love talking about religion. I think it's fascinating to see what others believe - or if it's even a conscious thing. Many religions are simply ways of living life rather than a set of dogmatic tenets one chooses to believe in. What surprises me is the number of people who say they're non-denomenational ___insert religion here___. It's just so weird to me that people could possibly think that there's such a thing as unbiased interpretation of religious texts! Having said that, my own beliefs are very personal - I'll talk the logistics of faith with just about anyone, but my own beliefs are just that: my own. One of my best friends is an atheist, and one of her coworkers has started a prayer circle for her and her immortal soul. She thinks it's hilarious, but if I were in her shoes, I'd want to punch them in the face for being so presumptuous!
  • For once I'm a special snowflake, so I voted for pass the wine. Big Smile

Personally, I'm a "don't believe in religion" type (if I had to label myself, it would be as a secular humanist).

HOWEVER, I also believe the third option, that most religions have the same principles, etc. I have absolutely no problem with people being religious, even strongly religious (a large portion of my family are fundamental Christians) and do not look down on them or their beliefs as long as they respect my beliefs as well. I guess at heart I'm a Kumbaya-let's-all-hold-hands-and-stop-fighting-about-petty-differences kind of person lol.

I voted for the 4th option, but also think the 3rd one is true, too.  I think religion has its place, and really works for some/most people, as long as there is tolerance as well.

  • I think the topic of religion is so fascinating. It's often hotly debated in my family. I was raised Catholic, attended Catholic and Jesuit schools, have family members who are Methodists, Traditionalist Catholics, and non-practicing. I have friends of all faiths. I no longer identify myself as Catholic and I married a man who is a practicing Buddhist and whose father is a top-ranking bishop in their sect. While I haven't officially converted, I do believe in the Buddhist way of life and I appreciate how open the belief system is.

That being said, I voted for number 4. I also believe number 3 but only if it had said "faith" or "belief" instead of "religion" in the line regarding the importance of individuals identifying with a religion that speaks to them. Because no matter if you believe in a church, a religion, a faith, a spiritual path, or nothing at all, I think it is important to search for whatever is within you and to make a conscious decision as to how you choose to live your life. I don't believe any faith or belief system is right or wrong. I just believe everyone should be aware and open when it comes to their own personal spiritual journey and the journeys of others.

    Great poll!
