XP: Recommend your point and shoot camera

I LOVE my Nikon CoolPix that I got a couple years ago. Unfortunately the up button stopped working and I'm thinking it's going to be expensive to fix and probably outdated anyways.

Can you recommend your point and shoot camera? We'd like to stay around $200-$250 and the only major requirement is that it easy to use, has a nice camera and video capabilities.

TIA!

Re: XP: Recommend your point and shoot camera

  • Both my husband and I had Casio Exilim's (from a few years back) and we both loved them. My husband lost his, but mine still is going strong even with the fact that it lived in the bottom of my purse.

I also have a Canon Powershot SD780 SI. I really love it, but I have always loved Canon. Some people don't like that it's not a super easy point and shoot (there is a good number of settings that you can change/play with). But I've never had an issue with just grabbing it and getting the picture I need. Though, what is easy for me might not be easy for someone else.

In the end I'd probably say look into the Casio Exilim line.

  • We have a Sony Cybershot.  LOVE it!  Its held up through a lot of abuse and was very reasonably priced.  We use it for both pictures and video and it has excellent quality on both.  I think we paid $170 for it about 3 years ago.

  • I don't know if Nikons have changed since you bought yours, but I haven't been impressed with the S570 I bought last december. The menu is annoying to navigate, and you have to enter that menu system to get to video--I find it much handier to have a dedicated video button. But the most annoying thing is the flash--it tries to be smart and reduce red eye by firing pre-flashes that it claims are "too fast for human response"--but apparently cats are quicker, because when I do my volunteer work for the cat shelter, the cats are always closing their eyes! (as are my cats at home).

So, that said, I wish I had gone with a Canon--I love my old canon S21S (and still use it regularly, esp. on vacations),  and liked the compact ones as well when I was shopping in December, but I ended up with the Nikon because it was on a great holiday sale.

If you can narrow down your list and borrow a camera from a friend or family member who happens to already own it, that's a great option--that way you can test-drive it to see what you really think in the situations you're most likely to be using it.

  • We have a Sony Cybershot and I don't like it :)  It takes great photos but the memory cards are expensive, only work in Sony products, and it burns through batteries.  It's older though, so that might be part of my problem.

  • I've had quite a few camera's, I've owed a Kodak, Nikon, and Canon Powershot. My Canon Powershot was by far the BEST point and shoot camera I have ever owned. Unfortunately someone else thought it was nice and stole it from my purse. I will def. purchase another after bad luck with the other two. The quality of the photos and zoom feature was the best i've had.

  • We just purchased a Panasonic DMC-ZS5 and love, love, love it!!  It has a 12X optical zoom and a very wide lens so you get a lot in one pic.  It is so easy to go through the settings and it has a custom setting so you can save 3 of your most used setting in the custom section.  There are 24 different scene settings and it has the intelligent auto setting also which picks whatever setting will work for the picture you're trying to take.  We are currently in Philly on vaca and i am thrilled with the picture quality the hundreds of pictures that we've already taken.

We did a lot of research before we bought this one, it was around $250 and totally worth every penny.  HTH!

This also shoots HD video, we used it at a concert with strobe lights and the video turned out great!  The camera is pocket sized too, so you can literally take it anywhere.

  • I owned a Sony Cybershot and a Canon Powershot.  Of the two, I liked the Canon better.  Compared to the Powershot, the Cybershot had a harder time in low lighting and the memory stick was annoying.

As far as the best point and shoot ever made so far, I am a big fan of the Canon Powershot G11.  Although it's a bit above your stated budget, this is voted by many product review magazines as most professional photographer's favorite point and shoot.
