not to bring up a horrible memory, but the only place you couldnt change your name w/ your marriage license was the passport agencey right? no issues w/ social security?
Re: **Brit**
thats what i was thinking....I know that previously i would have needed the court order since my MA marriage isnt "valid" here, but now that marriage is legal (or will be shortly) i was hoping to avoid the legal name change (its a big, annoying, process).
Its strange to me that SS would recongize a same sex marriage license but the passport peeps wont

If I remember correctly Brit just had to show ID with her new name so technically the SS office didn't recognize the SS marriage.
i see...well maybe the process is different b/c here the steps are:
1) Social security w/ marriage license
2) Department of motor vehicles for drivers license with new social security card and marriage certificate

Social security does indeed come first. And here in MA, they accept a MA marriage license to make the change.
Elise, CT social security should accept your marriage license and issue you a new card (it comes in the mail - they give you a receipt on the spot).
Then you go to RMV with marriage license and receipt from social security to get your new drivers license.
The passport agency requires a court order. They do not recognize ANY same-sex marriages, no matter what. In my case, I think mostly because my travel date had become SO close at that time, they allowed me to prove "customary use of name" by submitting doc's (tax forms, pay stubs, etc) that showed I had been using my new name for a long time (this won't work if you have just changed it and therefore can't show old dated doc's with your new name) in lieu of the court order.
So the short version of the story is - you need a court order, but the only people who will need to see it to change your name are the passport agency folks because they are endlessly stupid and DoMA is evil.
HTH!

Well, he can only repeal it if he becomes president.
