Teachers

Hello Fellow Teachers,

I am getting organized to start the new year and was wondering if anyone has a great organizational tip or strategy that you use and love? Each year I organize better, but it's great to hear new ideas. I'll PIP a pic of my classroom as soon as it's all put together. It's being tiled right now, so I won't be able to go in for another week to set up. :( That will be starting to cut it close.

 Thanks! (Also - I teach grades 7 and 8)

Re: Teachers

  • I teach 7, 8, & 9, so I understand the need for organization at this level (not that others don't need it). Our special creatures crave structure and organization.

One system I have in my room which my students consistently praise is my distribution system. I have a 3-shelf table by the door. The top shelf is papers they need for the class. (I NEVER hand out papers) The second shelf has my hall pass and kleenex (just a convenient location). The third shelf is for me only and it is where I keep my "supply signs" to place on the top shelf ("You need your textbook today", "you need your spiral today", etc.)

My students know that if they need ANYTHING for class, the information will be on that table. They take the handouts or information and are completely prepared when the bell rings. It gives them consistency and it saves me valuable teaching minutes.

I am an organizational freak, so let me know if you are looking for something more specific!

That's a great idea! Do you have a picture of this table? I always struggle with how to give them the info they need about being prepared without taking up valuable space on my whiteboard.

  • I have in and out baskets by period. Everything gets turned into the in basket. If it goes anywhere else, there is no guarantee it will get graded. In terms of the out basket, no one touches the paper in that box except me. When it's full I pass things back, usually on a friday.
  • Here ya go! Sorry it took so long to get back. I haven't checked this board in a bit.

It's not a great pic (I was taking a pic of the desks, not the table), but you can see the table by the door. The teacher next to me just bought an identical table at Target. She said it was around $20.

You can also see on the back wall where I keep calendars for each class period, and in the slip covers is where I post their grades each Monday.

I have 5 separate preps, so keeping the classes/levels separate is my specialty!
