Academic Poll

The post below made me think of this because I had to look up how to spell "complain."

I typed in "complane", "complaign", and "complagn" before accidentally getting it right.

My spelling is so bad that when I write on the board in class, I've had to invent something called "squiggle vowel" which just becomes a part of our class culture. You know how when you write in cursive (cursave?) you can just kind of make a squiggly line when you don't know if you should use an "i" "e" "a" or "o"? You can't fake it when you print, so my students know that squiggle vowel is a "choose your own adventure" letter.

So, my poll related to this will follow in my next post (for ease of quoting).

Re: Academic Poll

  • 1. What is/was your best subject?

    2. What is/was your worst subject?

    3. What did you major in?

    4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school?

    5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)?

    6. In general, do/did you like school?

  • imageamanjay:

    1. What is/was your best subject? social science- particularly sociology

    2. What is/was your worst subject? spelling (obviously!) and any kind of theoretical math. I can do applied/practical math. I can run and interpret statistics. But I have no idea WHY I'm doing what I'm doing, nor can I write a proof that tells you I'm doing the right things

    3. What did you major in? sociology, gender studies, and psychology for undergrad, social work and sociology for grad school

    4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school? I kind of do have this option through work, so, once I get settled into my job, I do plan to

    5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)? Two things appeal to me: higher ed administration and museum studies (even though I just had to look up how to spell "museum") I'd also like to learn Spanish.

    6. In general, do/did you like school? I didn't really like high school and I wasn't a great student. I LOVED college, though---so much so that I decided I never wanted to leave :)

  • 1. What is/was your best subject? History/Humanities.

    2. What is/was your worst subject? Math and Sciences! I HATED them. I still hate them and I'm terrible at both.

    3. What did you major in? Elementary Education. Working on getting it finished up. Finally.

    4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school? Well, I'm currently in school but if money and time weren't an issue, I would probably go on to get my Masters, for sure.

    5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)? History. I would want to learn all there is to learn about history.

    6. In general, do/did you like school? This semester I'm really loving it. In the past, not so much.

  • 1. What is/was your best subject? Probably English, spelling, and science.2. What is/was your worst subject? Organic chemistry. 3. What did you major in? Well, it was psychology the first time around.4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school? Why, yes I would! ;)5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)? Invertebrate biology and museum curation6. In general, do/did you like school? I did and still do. However, I really am ready to start making some money again.
  • 1. What is/was your best subject? History and languages

    2. What is/was your worst subject? Probably math.  I always did well enough to get good grades, but I never cared for it, and there is some stuff that just goes way over my head.

    3. What did you major in? French

    4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school? Absolutely!  If I could I would be a student forever.  I might go back to get a graduate degree one day, but I'm not sure what I would study.

    5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)? History, more languages, International Relations or maybe Substance Abuse Studies.

    6. In general, do/did you like school? I hated the social part of high school, but I enjoyed the academics and did really well.  I also LOVED college, and I wish I would have taken full advantage of my scholarship and stayed in school longer to do a double major (although I don't really know what the second major would have been - maybe Spanish or history).

  • 1. What is/was your best subject? Math and science.
    2. What is/was your worst subject? Probably history.
    3. What did you major in? Math4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school? Maybe....I've just never really felt that urge to go back though.5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)? Sometimes I regret not going into the medical field so if I did go back I would probably start all over and go into nursing.
    6. In general, do/did you like school? I loved HS.  I had a lot of friends, knew what I was doing, and it was easy.  The first half of college sucked for me.  I still had friends (a lot of us from HS went to OSU together), but I had no idea what I was doing....I couldn't decide on a major, the financial aspect stressed me out, and I just wasn't doing very well.  The second half went much better and I enjoyed it, but I think my overall experience is partly why I've never had the desire to go back.
  • 1. What is/was your best subject? Englsih, Band

    2. What is/was your worst subject? Math, History

    3. What did you major in? Instrumental Music Education

    4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school? I have gone back to school :)

    5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)? I might check out other types of classes, like photography or culinary classes besides regular academia.

    6. In general, do/did you like school? I liked my electives and English, mostly the literature. I was also a fairly talented writer and a fast read, so that class came quite easily for me. I enjoyed Debate quite a lot, and was even a state champion. Obviously I enjoyed my band class. Mostly I liked my electives because they got me out of school from time to time! Wink

    1. What is/was your best subject? math.  Ironically, only the 'harder' math subjects like algebra/trig....I still count on my fingers for basic addition and subtraction...haha

    2. What is/was your worst subject? history for sure.  Don't ask me anything to do with it.

    3. What did you major in? Speech Language Pathology ungrad and grad

    4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school?  Yes (and I can't believe I'm saying that!)

    5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)? I'd do either Audiology or P.A. school

    6. In general, do/did you like school? I really didn't think I did when I was in it, but now that I'm out, I LOVED it.  haha.

  • 1. What is/was your best subject? English

    2. What is/was your worst subject? Math--with the exception of geometry. For some reason, that course came naturally to me.

    3. What did you major in? public relations/journalism

    4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school? I am "back in school" working on my MEd. But, if I were independently wealthy and had the time, I would love to go back and study art history, law, or English lit

    5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)? See above.

    6. In general, do/did you like school? Yes. I dislike trying to work full time and attend school, however.

  • 1. What is/was your best subject? Reading/English classes generally, unless I disliked that particular teacher. History I generally did well in too.

    2. What is/was your worst subject? Math.

    3. What did you major in? Journalism with an emphasis on Broadcasting and Electronic Media... not that you asked, but I also minored in History.

    4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school? You bet! I would love to do that. I wish I had valued my education more than I did when I was in school.

    5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)? I would probably get another bachelor's in something like archaeology. And I would probably try to get a degree of some kind in history.

    6. In general, do/did you like school? I liked college, but before that it was a bear. In hindsight, I wish I had applied myself more and been more involved.

    3. What did you major in? Sonography

    5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)? see above

    6. In general, do/did you like school? Overall, yes, but life is stressful for me as a student.  Getting my pre-reqs, I was always a full time student and worker so that was really hard.  Now I'm a full time student that can't work and contribute income and it's even more stressful.

    3. What did you major in? I'm majoring in Mathematics Education

    4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school? I would quit my job and be a student full time. Ah, how nice that would be! I would probably finish my masters too.

    5. If so, what subject would you study (remember you're rich, so this doesn't need to be practical)? I would probably finish my masters. I think it would be neat to get a degree in music education too, I always loved band.

    6. In general, do/did you like school? I've always loved school. I didn't like the social part of high school at all, but I always loved the academic part of it. I don't like college quite as much (probably because it's harder lol) but I always find myself excited when a new semester starts.

  • I was actually pretty good in every subject.  Typical honors nerd.  I majored in international business, and got my MBA in information technology and international business.

It's funny this post came up, because over the weekend my mom made a comment to me about "going back to school and finishing up".  I don't know what I have to finish, and a long time ago I thought about doing a PhD and I guess my mom feels like it's an unfinished project for me.  Frankly, I would rather work and have money, than a million abbreviations behind my name, so my interest has obviously waned.  If I did have all the money in the world, I would definitely consider applying for a PhD program (international relations) since I wouldn't have to worry about paying bills, being practical, etc.  At the same time, I don't feel like I have unfinished business.  Apparently my mom does.

And yes, I LOVED school.  It's probably a good idea I don't work at a university anymore or else I'd get sucked into the whole academic thing and lose sight of the real world.

    2. What is/was your worst subject? Math...I know, I just put it as #1. But when I was younger I excelled at math and didn't have to take math past my 9th grade year. When I started college, I sucked bad at it.

    2. What is/was your worst subject?  history
    3. What did you major in?  I started out wanted to be a physical therapist, then realized that is a lot of science and I hate science so I decided on interior architecture.  Halfway though that degree I realized I really didn't like that either, but by then it would have taken me another 4 years to get a bach. in something I wanted (art therapy), so I finished the interior arch. degree and went to grad school for human relations, focusing on counseling/art therapy, then got pregnant and realized I didn't want to work outside the home so I dropped the counseling/therapy part and just finished the hr degree
    4. If you had all the free time/money in the world, would you go back to school?  In a heartbeat.
