I'm curious

How do you ladies feel about the mosque controversy in NYC?

Re: I'm curious

  • Wow... this could be interesting KMT... lol

I am in the boat that thinks its ridiculously un-American for people to actually NOT allow a mosque to be built. To me that is completely ignorant and not what are country stands for.

But I do understand that people have a right to be upset about it.

The thing is that you have to look at it this way. Do you think that people would have a problem with a Christian church being built near where an abortion clinic could have been bombed by terrorists claiming that they were doing it in the name of their religion?

No... nobody would ever speak out against that.

I understand why people are uncomfortable with Islam... and in fact, it bothers me that there isn't MORE speaking out against Muslim fanaticism... that is my problem with the Muslim religion (as it is today). I believe there needs to be WAY more speaking out against terrorism. Plain and simple, and there isn't enough of that being done.

IMHO I do think it may be in bad taste a bit... and is almost like the Muslims who want  the mosque to be built, are doing it purposely in that area, so they can have an excuse to show that people are against Muslims. I hope I would be wrong, but IMHO its a possibility.

But when all is said and done. To NOT allow them to build makes me sick, but I understand why people are biitching about it I guess.

  • I agree with juju..Here's my take. While I understand why people are upset about the idea, not everyone who practices Islam is a terrorist. Also, not all terrorists are Muslim. Muslims died in 9/11 along side Christians, and people of other religions. Those who oppose almost are saying the the 9/11 memorial will be open to white Christians only; now that's pretty un-american.

Exactly. I may feel differently if I was connected to it or close to it at all but I truly dont think so. Every single American should have the same rights, no matter what religion or race or sexuality they are, its why our country was founded.

  • Personally, I'm against putting a mosque at the site simply because I'm against putting any kind of religious institution building at the site.  No churches, temples, mosques, what have you.  People of many religions died there, so why should any one religion have a monopoly?

  • I am so over all of it.  Perhaps it's because I have several close friends that are Muslim, but I don't connect the religion with terrorist attacks.  As such, I don't really understand why people give it a second thought.

Ignoring my own views on that part of the debate, however, I still fall into the camp of 'since when can we dictate who builds a church.'  Plus, it's not actually AT ground zero.  It's a couple blocks away.  There are other churches about the same distance from ground zero.  BFD.  Andplusalso, there's already a prayer room there.  They are trying to make it a community center.  Why is that ever a bad thing?  And how could it be disrespectful/in poor taste to build a community center?

People have seriously blown this so far out of proportion, and I feel like very few people actualy understand what's going on, where the building is, and what the purpose of the place will be.

  • This certainly is a hot topic around here. There was a huge thread the other day on this on TK. So many people got flamed.

My problem with the mosque being built is the refusal to allow the Greek Orthodox church that was destroyed on 9/11 to be rebuilt. So far, it is not allowed to be rebuilt, but the mosque is. For me, this is just one of the issues. And then everyone preaches freedom of religion, which is all fine and dandy, but then why can't the other church be built as well? That is my beef right now with the issue.

  • I may be grossly uninformed (so feel free to flame away if I am), but..

I thought the difference between the Greek Orthodox church in question and the Islamic center is basically that the Islamic center already has the land and the building and investors and such.  And the Greek church, as I understand it, has been negotiating forever with the Port Authority on subsidies and such that will help them obtain a building.  I remember reading (I think sometime last spring) that the two sides couldn't come to an agreement over the cost and terms of getting the new space.

So if I'm not mistaken, no one is disallowing the church to rebuild, it's just that no one can afford it and they can't get enough subsidies to cover the difference.  Is that right?  But the Muslim center is right on track with their plans, so people are trying to stop it with red tape.  I'm legitimately not sure I have all the facts and I'm too lazy at this point to do any research.  In anycase...whatever.  I guess I'm getting so tired of hearing about it that I care less and less every time it's brought up.

  • First- it's not ON the site, it's 2 fricking blocks away!!!!!

Second- I'm so sure that every Muslim is an effing terrorist and it's ALL of their fault.

I've heard this being compared to the Carmelite convent that was built very close to Auschwitz (and later moved). Um, not the same. 9-11 was an act of terrorism against our COUNTRY, and the Holocaust was genocide- one religion was targeted for extermination. (among others, but the Jews were most definitely the main target). NOT the same, and even though I'm not a Jew it offends me to see that comparison made.

  • i vote: blown out of proportion. anyone who isn't in new york doesn't really have any need to go bananas on the subject. american's all of a sudden deciding that things that happen in new york are up for national debate annoys me to no end.. yes. there were a horrifying and terrible terrorist attacks, and while it's part of our history it doesn't make NYC America's social property. it's A community not Our community, and they can fight their own battles and debate their own issues. everyone else thinking they're suited to decide what's best for a neighborhood in a city far far away is dumb.

but! people trying to shock the public with "omg they have call for prayer and say the same things terrorists say before they kill people!!!!!!!" breeds intolerance and hate, and THAT makes me sick.
