Nervous!

Tomorrow is the first day of classes, and I start to teach my calculus class. All of a sudden, I'm nervous! Somehow, the idea of facing a class full of wide-eyed freshman waiting for ME to teach them something is intimidating right now.

Do any of you teachers have any tips to share?

Re: Nervous!

  • im not a teacher. but i do hope you have an awesome day! calculus is the best :) (ive got my degree in math). you will be perfectly fine dont even worry.

  • I think maybe the fact that YOU are the one teaching THEM, they'll be just as intimidated. It's calculus! Not the easiest subject.  But I'm sure they'd rather a Prof that is young and more relatable than some other profs around campus.  They'd probably respect you more too! :)

  • Good luck!!   I start next week... but will only have to teach a few lectures in one class this semester (to highly motivated students... )
  • First, take a deep breath and smile at them :)

Just share with them what you know, the rest will fall into place

Connect with them on a more personal level.  Ask them questions about their experiences being freshmen, their weekends, etc before jumping straigt into the material every week.

Go slow, ask if anyone has questions.  When they don't respond, ask again.  And again.

    Bring candy :)

  • It's later in the day, so I hope your first day went well.  We all get the butterflies on the first day.

  • Thanks, ladies :)

It went pretty well. They were super cute - you could tell it was their first day of college.

Although...I haven't changed my name yet, but I told the kids that I had just gotten married. I did tell them they can call me by my first name, but now some of them are calling me Mrs. OldLastName. I feel like my mother.
