Fun little survey

So Ainslee and I were having a chat (thanks for helping me out girl!) So I wanted to post this question to you all because I got to thinking....

What is the worst job you've ever had, and why so horrible?

How about the best and why?

What would your dream job be? (Realistic or unrealistic)

Re: Fun little survey

  • What is the worst job you've ever had, and why so horrible? McDonald's. Does that really need to be explained? It was awful, gross, hot grease burnt me on a daily basis, I got yelled at when customers were counting out pennies to pay me and it was holding everything up, my boss was an alcoholic... I could go on an on.

How about the best and why? The rest of my jobs have been great. I've worked in one office since high school, and it was so flexible, my boss is one of my good friends, etc. I also loved my job last fall working as a tutor in a first grade, it was only for three months, I am hoping that next week, I will get that position permanently.

What would your dream job be? (Realistic or unrealistic) A classroom teacher in a school district that is supportive and where the parents have a vested interest, but aren't hovering. Also, something that would allow me to travel, or there was a job I wanted as a camp counselor for children with serious and chronic illness.
  • Worst job: For 3 weeks in college one summer, I worked at the university calling center. You know, the people who call parents and alumni and ask for money. It was horrible. You had to ask them 3 times for money before it was ok to get off the phone. I just kept hoping people would hang up on me. A surprising number of people did donate though.

Best job: In high school, I coached my gymnastics team after I had stopped competing. I loved coaching; I hope I can do it again some day.

Dream job: I really wish I knew. Right now, my intention is to become a professor, but I don't know if that's something I'll really love doing or not.

  • What is the worst job you've ever had, and why so horrible?

I sort of posted and ran....but my worst job was working at Abercrombie & Fitch. It was horrible. I mean horrible. I never left the fitting rooms. I had to beg one day to stock clothes. I was never trained on the cash register either. And the discount versus the price of clothes wasn't worth it in the slightest.

How about the best and why?

I really liked my score keeping job. And I guess working at the newspaper had some awesome moments. Free tickets to concerts and getting paid to watch sports. Can't complain about that.

What would your dream job be? (Realistic or unrealistic:

Well getting paid to watch sports is pretty sweet. But getting paid to do nothing but travel and read books and drink coffee would be awesome too.

  • You're so welcome, Kayla! You're going to do great on Monday!!

Worst Job:  One summer I worked at a day care, and I swear they were violating so many rules and regulations. I was in the baby room by myself and it was so unsanitary. They wouldn't provide wipes because they were too expensive, but they'd only give me so many washcloths. I ended up taking washcloths home everyday and washing them myself so that I'd know it got done. Needless to say, I ended up quitting that job early. Poor kids. That day care is no longer open thank goodness!

Best Job: Since I'm still finishing up college, I work part-time at Bath & Body Works. I absolutely love it! I've been there over three years now. I love the product, the customers are fun, and the staff is like a family. I've made so many great friends. And the discount is a nice bonus, too :)

Dream Job: Teaching high school journalism. I want to find a school that the journalism teacher teaches only journalism, not English too. This is how it was at my high school and I loved it. I'm actually doing a practicum at my high school in the journalism department this semester and I am sooo excited for it!!

  • Worst Job:  I was a camp counselor one summer and it was a nightmare.  I had 35 second graders and the counselor who I was supposed to be working with spend about 15 mins with us each day.  She was always out in her car or in another room on her cell phone...it was awful

Best Job:  My current job!  I am a pre-k teacher and I love it.  The kids are so much fun and the people I work with are great.

Dream Job:  Although I love my job, I eventually would like to teach first grade in a school that is supportive to both students and staff.  I also have thought about being a clinical psychologist specializing in therapy for families and children with autism.  I would also like to consult with schools.

    What

  • Worst job:  maybe my last one for a variety of reasons.  I was in grad school for sooo long-  I thought things would be different with the post-doc (kind of like residency),  but it was like starting all over again and having to prove myself again.   And I was away from friends and family.   There were good things about it-  but I wasn't happy (more the situation than the job itself, and I don't know many people who like their post-docs). Having a student use my computer on a daily basis before I got there really sucked, too.   Other than that-  I worked at a kitchen store in a mall one Christmas in college.  The assistant manager hated me (b/c I could do math in my head and didn't double check the register when making change) and thought I was stealing money.  That was miserable!!

Best job: Hopefully my new one will be!!  My most fun job-  I worked at a small factory most summers/breaks during college.  There were a ton of summer workers, and we usually had fun time.   Other than that- while I was in grad school I was able to travel a ton and had a ton of freedom/responsibility to do my own thing.  My boss was awesome and I like most of the people I worked with.

Dream job (unrealistic):  Would open a bakery/sandwich shop that also sold stationary.   I love to bake and cook, and love all things paper (I don't like to scrapbook or anything, I just like the paper, and would have loved to make my own invites if I had any more time).   Either that or a kindergarten teacher.

Dream job (realistic):  Hopefully my new one!  I will be teaching my favorite science subject to physician assistant students and osteopathic medical students.   And will get to do  some research.  And still go to conferences.  And will have my own office and my own lab.  The scary part is that I am probably expected to know things- and I still feel like I know NOTHING.

  • Worst: I worked for dining services in college - in the HUGE refrigerator. I suppose it wasn't a horrible job because I was in there by myself, listened to my iPod and just bagged up all the vegetables that were needed for the day.

Best: I was a lifeguard for 4 years in HS/college. I loved it. Getting paid to hang out in the sun - perfect! It was a small country club pool so I got to know the members an never had to make a save.

I also really liked a part of my old job in Atlanta. I sold and serviced suites for the basketball and hockey teams as well as any arena events. The selling part sucked but I loved the service aspect. Plus going to games and concerts for free wasn't bad either :)

Dream: I want to go back to school and get my masters in exercise science. I don't know exactly what I want to do with it - I've thought about a bunch of different things, from corporate wellness, working in a school system, or a physical therapy place. I know I want to do something wellness/health/exercise related.

  • What is the worst job you've ever had, and why so horrible? I don't even know....I worked at a library at my college and as much as I really liked it the woman who I worked with the most and discussed a lot of things with began to just make me do all the work. I would come in and see other student workers doing their homework and I was like WTF I never got to do my homework I was always sent to unload shelves and shelves of books....I ended up going to her boss and complaining about her unfairness.

How about the best and why? I loved working at my college in the admissions office! I gave tours and answered phones and went on yahoo answers for hours....I really wish I was engaged so I could have been on TK haha. But I do remember looking up wedding rings and dresses!

What would your dream job be? (Realistic or unrealistic) I would love to work in travel as my full time job during the day, I would love to help people choose their vacation! But I also would like to have full time dance jobs. I gotta get my foot in another studio.

  • Worst job:  This one!  I have learned that I am not made to do research. My boss is an enormously cranky jerk.  Many of my coworkers are in bad moods more often than good ones.

I also really hated working as a runner for a law firm.  It would have been fun if they had trained me properly.  They just kept saying, "Oh, the previous girl knew how to do this, but none of us do," and then they'd be upset when I didn't do something right.

Best job:  Working at a retail store.  I met my husband there, as well as another one of my best friends.  The summer I started, everyone was like a family.  We all got along, went climbing after hours, etc.  I love serving people when I feel competent and I know what I am providing people with.

Dream job:  I would have loved to have become a Spanish or ESL teacher, but I have doubts about my ability to really connect with kids and young adults, and to teach well.  I would hate to be a bad teacher and negatively affect a child's education.

I am starting grad school this fall to become a public librarian.  This, I think, will be the perfect fit of serving others and educating them, and I feel really well-suited for the profession, just based on my personality.  And I love to read, alphabetize, and organiz. :)
