Dress: To Clean and Preserve or Not?

I'm totally torn on this.....I love my dress, but I know I'm not going to wear it again and there were no major stains on it, just the normal dirty on the bottom.  A decent clean/preserve in my area runs around $200-250.  I know everyone says they do it hoping that their own daughter will want to wear their dress someday, but really, how likely is that to happen?  I know I wouldn't have worn my mom's dress.  What are you all doing?  Is it worth the $$$?

Re: Dress: To Clean and Preserve or Not?

  • I had mine preserved by wedclean and it was around $150 with shipping. They ship a box to you, you ship it back, they clean, and then ship it back to you. I just got it back today and it looks great!

  • I am having mine cleaned and preserved.  My mom dropped it off when she returned by dad and brother's tuxes.  I am not sure what will come of it in the future, but I wanted to keep the dress, just in case, I guess!

  • I'm thinking about donating mine to Brides Against Breast Cancer or some other organization.  I agree that I can't see spending loads of money to preserve a dress that probably won't be worn again.

  • I had mine drycleaned, and they stuffed it etc for storage. It was just under $200. I figured that even if it sits in the bag for the next 20 years, I spent so much money on things that are gone now, I might as well keep this properly.

My dress was filthy though. Like, seriously dirty. We did most of our pictures in a park and a natural area, and I wasn't afraid of going anywhere. Honestly, between the layers of crinoline, there were a few dead bugs. I had a black shoe scuff or 2 from dancing with the guys, at least 4 large grass stains, tree sap, I think someone may have spilled a little bit of beer on my train etc. It really needed to be cleaned in one way or another if I was going to keep it at all.

In the future, I don't really expect anyone else to wear my dress (although I think it is beautiful, and has a classic shape), but we may use it to create Baptismal gowns for future children, or handkerchiefs for future children's weddings etc. I think it's so much rich fabric, I'll use it for something, eventually. Maybe a family- heirloom pillow, or for use on a family quilt.

  • I hemmed and hawed about this as well.  The bridal shop that I purchased it from will clean and preserve it for $209, so I think I am going to get it cleaned and then hold on to it for a little while.

I think eventually I will sell it/ donate it, but I'm just not ready yet.

  • I plan on getting mine cleaned and preserved.  I'm slacking on that though!  For me, I don't want to regret giving the dress away however many years down the road.  I know, the odds are that it will just sit in the attic forever but I just can't part with it.

  • I am just getting mine cleaned and then I think I will make an effort to sell it, pretty cheap. I like the idea that someone else can wear my beautiful gown and won't have to pay an arm and a leg for it. If I am able to sell it, I plan to buy my mom something nice with the money (she paid for it originally).
