How was your Alaskan cruise?  Did you see Russia?  Did you poop on Sarah Palin's welcome mat?

Re: HT

  • The cruise was good!  I am still kind of jet lagged and tired, but I'm glad we went.  I learned during the cruise that older people get really pushy at buffets.

When we were at sea, we spent a lot of time in one of the bars because it had a panoramic view.  One afternoon, this passenger decided to celebrate his birthday by giving a 1-hour accordion concert.  He attracted a group of 15-20 fans who sang along with him to songs like the Beer Barrel Polka, and other old songs I'd never heard before.  Does our generation have any songs like that?

The only Palin-esque encounter we had was when we were driving by the governor's mansion in Juneau.  Our tour bus driver, who seemed to be in his 20s, said Bristol once threw a raging party there that had to be broken up by the police.  I'm not sure how much he was exaggerating.

I was tired pretty much every night, so we watched several movies on the ship's movie channel.  The Proposal is terrible.

Also, the Hudson News store at the Seattle Airport was selling Twilight coffee, shot glasses, apparel, and "Sparkle Lotion."

  • How many tubes of Sparkle Lotion did you end up buying?

  • I wonder if Sparkle Motion wears Sparkle Lotion.

  • I seriously considered stocking up on Twilight items for this year's Secret Santa gift, but then I worried that I'd end up getting someone who does not enjoy Twilight mockery.

I also saw a lady in the airport wearing a t-shirt for some Twilight-themed cruise through the Pacific Northwest.

  • OH.  I have one more story.  It's judgey, so I think it's fitting to post here.

One afternoon there was an ice carving demonstration given by one of the chefs on the ship.  He set up with a giant block of ice on the swimming deck, on a patio between the pool and the hot tubs.

There was a band of children who used the pool basically from dawn 'til dusk every day.  When the ice carving demo began, the kids all piled into the hot tubs to watch so they could have front-row seats.  Despite the fact that the chef was swinging around a pick axe and other tools with all his might, these kids kept inching forward to grab and eat chunks of ice that were flying off of the emerging statue.  Finally, another member of the ship's staff had to scold them and get them to move away.  I started looking around for the kids' parents.  One set was at the bar at the other end of the deck, another mother was sitting a few feet away and didn't see anything wrong with her daughter's behavior, and the rest of the parents didn't seem to be on deck at all (there was no lifeguard for the pool, by the way).  I judged.

Separately, I also judged the parents who let their young sun bring a hot dog into the pool.

  • ew, food and bandaids should never be in pools, yo.

Glad you had fun. So was the cruise mostly older people?

  • There were a fair amount of older people, but there were also families with kids and some people in their 20s.  The trips and tours that we did while we were on land seemed to be mainly people in their 20s-40s.  From what I could tell, a good portion of the older people didn't leave the boat when we stopped at different ports.

We had read before booking that this cruise line had above average food and accommodations but wasn't really for people who like to party.  They did have nightclub-type events every night starting at 10pm or so, but we never went, so I don't know what the attendance was like there.

  • my sister went on an Alaskan cruise and said it's one of the most beautiful places to see.  peeectures??

how was the motion of the ocean?  choppy at all?  do you get sea sick?  I do, so I'm always resistant to booking a cruise but I know it would be fun.

  • well it sounds like you had fun!
  • Tasty, if you were not such a negligent FB user, you would have seen my photo album alreadyStick out tongue.

We had pretty calm seas, thankfully.  One morning was rough and I felt awful while sitting in our cabin, but it got better once I went to the deck with the most open space and just sat.  I think we rocked a lot at night, also, but I was able to sleep through it.

Here are two pics of scenery and giant me.  My chest is up a cup size and still growing.  Scary.

  • FB is the debbil.  If I go on there, then I'll have to explain to my dad, sister, cousin, etc., why I won't accept them as friends.

those are some magestic mountains.  so pretty.  and you look adorable!

  • ha, Coley!  well, it works either way.  HT's mountains are quite magestic also!

  • When I went to pick up my lunch today, a lady on the street asked me if I was "just about due."  Indifferent

  • WTF?  I don't get that at all.  You look barely pregnant!

  • We are about to book an Alaskan cruise for next summer. If you don't mind, I have a few questions.

What cruise line did you use? What was your favorite land tour?

But my most important question is what did you use to hit the lady on the street?

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz
  • We did a Holland America cruise.  We really liked the whale watching trip we did in Juneau.  The company running the whale watching boat was Allen Marine, but we booked through the cruise line.  We also liked seeing the Mendenhall Glacier because there is a little park around it where you can walk around and get different vantage points.

We liked stopping at Victoria, BC, but we were only there for about 6 hours (6pm-midnight), which I thought was too short.  We did a "highlights of Victoria" bus tour and visited Craigdarroch Castle, which was actually just more of a house full of antiques.  If I could do it again, I would pick a different excursion for Victoria.

We didn't do any of the excursions involving more intense hiking or kayaking/canoeing, because I didn't know how I'd feel doing that stuff while pregnant.  Otherwise I would've been interested.  And we didn't do anything involving sea planes because little planes scare me, but it seems like those could be exciting if you're brave.

  • We are deciding between Holland and Princess but it will probably boil down to price. The travel agent at AAA warned us we might be on the young side with Holland but at least we'd have our choice of late dinner times and the run of the nightclub.

What are your thoughts on traveling while pregnant?

The current plan is to hold off on and let this be our last big trip before we start trying but there is a slight possibility that I might go off birth control earlier.

  • How pregnant? The first 14 weeks and the last 8 weeks would have been miserable for traveling for me.

The hair grows in thick where the horn used to be.
  • I was thinking early to mid-pregnancy but it occurred to me after I asked that combining morning sickness with possible sea sickness sounds like hell.

I imagine I wouldn't want to leave my house in the last 8 weeks nevermind go on a trip.
