Dress: To Clean and Preserve or Not?
I'm totally torn on this.....I love my dress, but I know I'm not going to wear it again and there were no major stains on it, just the normal dirty on the bottom. A decent clean/preserve in my area runs around $200-250. I know everyone says they do it hoping that their own daughter will want to wear their dress someday, but really, how likely is that to happen? I know I wouldn't have worn my mom's dress. What are you all doing? Is it worth the $$$?
Re: Dress: To Clean and Preserve or Not?
I had mine drycleaned, and they stuffed it etc for storage. It was just under $200. I figured that even if it sits in the bag for the next 20 years, I spent so much money on things that are gone now, I might as well keep this properly.
My dress was filthy though. Like, seriously dirty. We did most of our pictures in a park and a natural area, and I wasn't afraid of going anywhere. Honestly, between the layers of crinoline, there were a few dead bugs. I had a black shoe scuff or 2 from dancing with the guys, at least 4 large grass stains, tree sap, I think someone may have spilled a little bit of beer on my train etc. It really needed to be cleaned in one way or another if I was going to keep it at all.
In the future, I don't really expect anyone else to wear my dress (although I think it is beautiful, and has a classic shape), but we may use it to create Baptismal gowns for future children, or handkerchiefs for future children's weddings etc. I think it's so much rich fabric, I'll use it for something, eventually. Maybe a family- heirloom pillow, or for use on a family quilt.

I hemmed and hawed about this as well. The bridal shop that I purchased it from will clean and preserve it for $209, so I think I am going to get it cleaned and then hold on to it for a little while.
I think eventually I will sell it/ donate it, but I'm just not ready yet.
