Restaurant Rec's

hi ladies, i am coming to the Boston area this weekend to visit one of your fellow nesties (MrsMc091909) and we are looking for a good place to have a seafood dinner in Boston. we are planning to take the T train from the south shore, into downtown on Saturday evening. we realize we're going to have to make reservations or have a long wait.

i've been told by some that Legal Seafood is great and by others that its not. we'd prefer not to go anywhere very chain-y and something more locally known but nice. any rec's?

thanks :)

Re: Restaurant Rec's

  • I'm a big fan of Union Oyster House. It's the oldest restaurant in the country and really cute! It's in Faneuil Hall.

Union Oyster House is really cool for the historical peice but the last time I ate there I was really disappointed.  Could have just been a bad night but it didn't really make me want to go back.

I would suggest Legal Seafoods.  That place is yummy.

  • Legal's is definitely a chain, and while I really, really like their clam chowder, the rest of the food is "eh."

I know PunkyBooster always recommends Turner Fisheries, though I haven't been there myself.  I've also heard good things about Atlantic Fish Co. in the Back Bay.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • OMG, DO NOT come to Boston and eat at Illegal Seafood. For the love, that is like going to Italy and eating at the Olive Garden.

What about The Barking Crab? It is pricey and touristy, but it's on the water and they usually have live music, it's family style dining, and it's good. I also like Tavern on the Water in Charlestown.

thats what i was told. its apparently the New England version of Red Lobster.

i'm gonna check out the menus of all the suggestions and also locations. we didnt really have anything else on our to-do list but we would like to do some exploring while there.

    thanks ladies!

  • I also really like the Sail Loft. It's smaller and not as fancy as some other places- but right on the water and yummy food!

  • The great thing about most Boston restaurants is that you can find good seafood dishes on most menus. (That's a problem for SO since he does not like seafood.) ; )

I agree with everyone about Legal... the person who compared it to Olive Garden was right on! : )

Check out the Yelp reviews for Barking Crab. They are very mixed. I have not heard great things about their food.

Atlantic Fish Company is pretty good. It's part of the Back Bay Restaurant Group, which several other restaurants in the area, but AFC is not a chain. They received some great reviews on Yelp.

Neptune Oyster is in the North End and friends of mine LOVE this place. (Side note... if you go to the North End run to Maria's Pastry Shop for the best cannoli in Boston... ignore the long line and pre-stuffed cannoli from Mikes or Modern pastry, don't miss Maria's!)

B&G Oyster in the South End is very good, but a bit pricey.

Market at the W hotel is an excellent restaurant.

    Other suggestions:

Stella on Washington Street. Great modern Italian food, delicious drinks.

Sportello. Like B&G, this is a Barbara Lynch restaurant. Located in the Fort Point neighborhood, Sportello features lunch counter seating, with a view into the open kitchen. Great homemade pastas. A good place for a hearty lunch.

Sams on the Waterfront. We just had drinks at Sams recently and the view was amazing. The food all looked and smelled wonderful, and the prices seemed pretty affordable.

If you are here on a Monday, check out Sel De La Terre in the Back Bay at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. They have some great bar food including $2.00 sliders on Mondays from 5-7. They are fantastic! BTW SDLT was awarded the Best Burger in Boston by Boston Mag. SO and I have been a fan of their burger for a long time! It's awesome. : )

Mikes Dinner in the South End has one of Boston's best heart breakfasts. Very affordable, great neighborhood feeling.

Flour Bakery... OMG!!! Their Sticky buns were featured on Throw Down with Bobby Flay. They are fantastic. There are three locations. I also love their cookies. (Their Chunky Lola cookie maybe my favorite cookie of all time!)

Bouchee on Newbury St. has a nice menu. I have had some great, simple fish dishes there as well. Everything is good, from the burger to the steak frites.

Franklin Cafe in the south end, (friends have accused me of buying my condo based on the fact that it is across the street from this little gem) is fantastic! It's easy to miss, but delicious every time.

    Inexpensive lunch places:

Steve's Greek on Newbury Street. YUMMM

Flour Bakery... I know I mentioned them before, but they have great sandwiches too!

South End Formaggio. A small selection of really good sandwiches, made fresh daily, then grilled. They can not make sandwiches to order, but SO and I eat there for lunch often. Plus, you can also grab some great cheese, bread and nibbles and make your own lunch to go.

Upper Crust Pizza... so many locations, but god pizza.

Cafe Bella Vita on Charles Street on Beacon Hill... go for the ice cream. It's expensive, but so worth it.

Hope this is helpful.. I know it's more that you asked for, but I love to visit different restaurants in the area and these are just some of my favorite. : )

    Enjoy your time in Boston!
