I got certified through PADI. It is one of the associations that has certification programs, so if you go through someone else it may be slightly different but I'm sure very similar.
Basically there are 3 major components of leanring how to dive. You will have some time in a classroom learning about the science behind diving, techniques and best practices. A couple times you will break away and go into a pool to try out and perfect the skills you have talked about (good breathing, bouancy control, how to get into the pool, how to recover if something goes wrong). The final part is an open water dive in a lake. There are a few techniquest that you have to prove that you can do in the open water dive to become certified...but you will have practiced them in the pool before hand.
I did the classroom and pool dives one weekend and then the open water dive in a second weekend. Since becoming certified last summer I have not been diving yet. So we'll see how much I've retained!!!
Re: amaretto
Thanks! I would love to do it, but I'm gonna be so honest here:
Just the thought of the open water dive in a lake makes my heart stop and beat faster at the same time. I'm TERRIFIED of fish, especially lake fish!
So if I can get over it, I'm SO there
Thanks again for all the information!
