Towels Discolored

Recently we bought new towels-hand towels, bath towels, wash cloths, etc...For whatever reason after using them and washing the hand towels are stained. They are gray, but there are light purple splotches but only on the hand towels. I'm wondering if it is from an ingredient in a face medicine I use (that is the only thing I can think of). Is there any way that I could get the stains off or are they ruined? I'm open to any suggestions!!

Thanks so much!

Re: Towels Discolored

  • May be from something you are using on your face. I'm using a benzoyl peroxide lotion on my face and messed up my BF's towles and sheets. On the towels, the splotches only showed up after he washed them. At my house I used only white sheets and towels becuase I can't go without lotion or my face will break out.
  • Ditto the pp. A lot of acne medications will bleach your towels (Proactiv is a big one that does it). It gets brought up on here every couple months. I think the general consensus is that nothing happens to the towels/sheets until you wash them and then they're wrecked.

  • It's most likely something you use on your face.  You might also have a little bit of bleach in your washer.
  • Ditto to the comments on benzoyl peroxide. However, when my face gel bleached our towels, it did just that - bleach white spots on them. When I had bluish-purple stains on towels (and a couple select clothing items) previously it was actually due to the detergent being too concentrated in one spot, or so I assume. That's just what it looked like. They faded wash after wash...I held the detergent under the water as it ran to ensure it fully diluted before pouring whatever was left in the dispenser around the clothes.
  • This happens to me, but I don't use any acne medications whatsoever. I brought it up at my yearly physical and my doc told me that I most likely have acidic skin, which is bleaching out all my stuff when I sweat when I sleep. So we have all white towels, sheets, and I've also been known to bleach out shirts that I sweat in. It's strange.
  • Thanks so much for all of your responses!
