Washington DC?

DH and I are thinking about taking a short trip to DC this fall. I'm unreasonably excited about it and I don't even know if we're actually going yet :)

I've never been to the east coast (other than FL). I need suggestions on what to do, what to see, where to stay, and where to eat.

Also... would anyone interested in a GTG?? Big Smile We're looking at either my birthday weekend (Oct 18) or mid-November.

Re: Washington DC?

  • just come to KY instead. i'll show you guys a fab time. promise.
  • I just came back from DC...and I HIGHLY reccomend the hotel I stayed it.  It's the Hotel Palomar Arlington.  It's right across the river from Georgetown.  The hotel is amazing and the location is great.  Plus if you fly into DCA you can take the train.

Plus you would be walking distance to a lot of the major things.  Or a short bus/train ride.  AND you'd be near Georgetown Cupcake (order ahead).  Definately go to the Smithsonian, it's AMAZING.

Beyond that I have no advice.

  • Me!!!!

Hopefully I'm in town when you guys come. I will love to mee you. As fas as what to do...just walking around the National Mall/museums/monuments will take you a few days. Some people like to do the hop-on hop-off busses because the don't have to walk/take taxi and it takes you to the highlights of DC.

You can fly to either DCA (which is right there in DC), BWI (you can take the MARC train down to DC...or if I'm in town and you need me to I can give you a ride as I live like 10 mins from the airport) or you can fly to IAD, but you might hit bad traffic.

If you end up really coming let us know so I can give you some restaurants recomendations.

  • "go to the Smithsonian, it's AMAZING"...there are tons of Smithsonians...which one?

I say get yourself on one of those decaptiation bus tours.  The one we took went all around DC/Georgetown/etc and had a bunch of stops.  The tickets are good for two days (just keep your receipt) and you can get on an off at any of the stops.  Amanada hooked us up with one and it was really the best way to go, I think.  We sat and enjoyed the tour (or most of it) first until we decided exactly where we wanted to get off.  Most of the Smithsonians are free so don't feel like if you're committed to just one.  Don't bother with the aquarium.  DEF do a Georgetown Cupcake run.  Have a good time!

  • we're going next weekend for labor day!!! I'm so excited, but cannot for the life of me plan an itinerary!!! Theres just so much to see and do!
  • OOOO! You should def go mid-november and I'll meet you guys for a g2g!!!!!
  • I would love to GTG!

I prefer the National History and Air and Space Smithsonian.  The Zoo is really good.  The Holocaust museum is a must.  And the Spy Museum is lots of fun.  Also, I think you have to go to Arlington National Cemetery.  Go at the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier.  And the Vietnam war memorial is pretty amazing.

Georgetown is the place to go to shop and has some decent bars.  There are some great restaurants in Georgetown and a short walk from there on the waterfront.

Chinatown has just had a major face lift and also has some good restaurants and is where the Capitals play if you're interested in hockey. Also, you can take a bus to NY for $30/round trip if you have time.

  • DC is only 3/4 hr away from us and my bff lives there now, so I would def be up for a G2G (on the weekend obviously because of work Tongue Tied).  Let me know if you guys end up making the trip.

We stayed at Days Inn suites once right next to George Wash University.  It was really nice and had a full kitchen/living room and was actually cheaper than a lot of the other local hotels (not sure of cost now as this was 2 yr ago)

I hope you guys are able to make the trip!
