XP: Washer/Dryer recs?

We need a new set & there are just so many options in so many price ranges & I'm a tad overwhelmed.  I haven't seen any good reviews on a *set*...usually either the washer or dryer is good/bad.  I don't need a lot of fancy options, I just want them to be big & to really clean using less energy & water & to not cost an arm & a leg.  Anyone?

Re: XP: Washer/Dryer recs?

  • We have a Whirlpool set that got last year and we really like it.  The washer has a sensor that detects the size of the load and only uses the amount of water needed for that load.

    I can't find the dryer.

  • we just had a set delivered this saturday after doing a lot of research on the net as to price and brand.  we chose the samsung WF210ANW washer ($539) and its matching dryer, DV210AEW ($539).  we wanted a front loading washer, though, and they tend to be more expensive.  however, i looked all over the net for prices and found the cheapest at best buy and conn's, but those stores charge for delivery.  lowe's price matched and delivered and installed for free.  sears will also deliver and install for free.  i think i remember seeing their ad on tv that was talking about price matching.

i also checked more local stores (i.e. non-big box stores), but lowe's price matched price and free delivery was the best i found.

eta:  we've done about 6 loads so far, and they work like a dream.  that dryer is much, much faster than our old one!  and it plays music when it's done.  sweet.  downside: now i want ALL new appliances!

  • We got a new washer and dryer about 4 months ago -- I also did a lot of research and read a ton of reviews, and eventually I figured out that every single model has good and bad reviews, so you should really just go with what's in your price range and has the features you want. We ended up getting a Whirlpool Cabrio high-efficiency washer with the matching steam dryer at Lowe's. They knocked some money off the price because we were actually going to go with the dryer that was the next step down and it wasn't in stock. It also qualified for the city rebate. We bought it on a Sunday morning and it was delivered to our house in 1.5 hours! No problems at all with either unit so far -- and I love that the washer has a see-through window at the top, haha. I'm a dork.
  • We looked at online reviews and also at Consumer Reports when buying our set four years ago. The Kenmore brands at Sears (same as Whirlpool at other stores) were rated very highly then. What we ended up doing was going to Sears and getting the second-to-lowest priced Kenmore models in the largest size possible. So we have just a couple of frills but a large and very efficient set. We have been perfectly happy without a lot of fancy features.
