H got a new job up on the UWS (by Columbia University) and he starts in a few weeks.
My office building will be relocating to LIC next year (second half of 2011).
We're on a month to month lease now and currently live in Forest Hills. We thought that given the new job and my new office location, maybe we should consider moving. We're thinking Astoria, Long Island City or maybe Roosevelt Island. I'm a little partial to Astoria and LIC, though Roosevelt Island could be nice too (but there's nothing there, and I worry about the consistency of the F train).
Thoughts? Obviously this is not an immediate move but are there any pros/cons to any of those locations? I used to work in Astoria, so H and I are intimately familiar with it, though there seem to be some nice high rises in LIC popping up as well.
Re: Where would you move to?
I lived in Sunnyside for years and now live in Forest Hills. Honestly, I love this neighborhood. So I wouldn't move. I go to LIC often and it takes me 30 minutes, if that. If you lived on Roosevelt Island, it would actually be a bit of a hike to get to LIC unless you drove since there is no direct train. Astoria would require at least one transfer.
Honestly, I would look at the whole picture. Do you like your apartment? Do you like the neighborhood? If so, a bit of a commute might not be worth a move. I know that I get more for my money living here than in Astoria and, definitely, LIC. For me, the small additional commute time doesn't negate the benefits of living here.
LIC is waaaay to expensive for what it is. The rents reflect the fact that it is so close to Manhattan, and not what the neighborhood actually offers. It's still "up and coming" but IMO not worth the rents they are charging at this point.
Astoria is fun, you can probably find a good deal on an apartment. And ther is a ton of stuff to do.
I wouldn't do Roosevelt Island only because I don't like the idea of having to leave the island to do basically anything. Having to depend on a train or the tram to function would give me claustrophobia, I think!
So, of those three, I would pick Astoria!
