Where would you move to?

H got a new job up on the UWS (by Columbia University) and he starts in a few weeks.

My office building will be relocating to LIC next year (second half of 2011).

We're on a month to month lease now and currently live in Forest Hills.  We thought that given the new job and my new office location, maybe we should consider moving.  We're thinking Astoria, Long Island City or maybe Roosevelt Island.  I'm a little partial to Astoria and LIC, though Roosevelt Island could be nice too (but there's nothing there, and I worry about the consistency of the F train).

Thoughts?  Obviously this is not an immediate move but are there any pros/cons to any of those locations?  I used to work in Astoria, so H and I are intimately familiar with it, though there seem to be some nice high rises in LIC popping up as well.

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.

Re: Where would you move to?

  • I live in Woodside and love it. I'm at the 61st St stop on the 7 which is also an LIRR stop. I used to work at 67 and Columbus and it would take me 40 minutes tops (baring a snowstorm) door to door. If I was feeling lazy I'd hop on the LIRR and it would take 25 minutes. The H and I looked into LIC but decided to stay put mainly because our rent is crazy cheap and we love our place. I didn't like that the newer places by the Pepsico sign because there's not much in the neighborhood. You're okay on the water but the walk to the train is through a pretty industrial area. And the buildings near Queensboro Plaza is just a totally sketchy neighborhood. Forget about the strip clubs, the bus from Rikers drops off the parolees right there! We love Astoria and are there all the time. And then we love coming home to Woodside as well.
  • I live in Astoria and I absolutely love it. We'd love to stay here as long as possible and love our apt too. I've never really visited the LIC area so my opinion is biased. I've also never been to Roosevelt Island but I used to have to commute on the E or F train from Queens and  I was NOT a fan of either at all. I rarely have problems on the N/Q though and they have a stop close to my work so maybe that's another reason why I am partial. haha. Anyway, good luck with making a decision! :)

  • I lived in Sunnyside for years and now live in Forest Hills.  Honestly, I love this neighborhood. So I wouldn't move.  I go to LIC often and it takes me 30 minutes, if that.  If you lived on Roosevelt Island, it would actually be a bit of a hike to get to LIC unless you drove since there is no direct train. Astoria would require at least one transfer.

Honestly, I would look at the whole picture.  Do you like your apartment?  Do you like the neighborhood?  If so, a bit of a commute might not be worth a move. I know that I get more for my money living here than in Astoria and, definitely, LIC. For me, the small additional commute time doesn't negate the benefits of living here.

  • LIC is waaaay to expensive for what it is.  The rents reflect the fact that it is so close to Manhattan, and not what the neighborhood actually offers.  It's still "up and coming" but IMO not worth the rents they are charging at this point.

Astoria is fun, you can probably find a good deal on an apartment.  And ther is a ton of stuff to do.

I wouldn't do Roosevelt Island only because I don't like the idea of having to leave the island to do basically anything.  Having to depend on a train or the tram to function would give me claustrophobia, I think!

So, of those three, I would pick Astoria!
