Need job advice.. what would you do?

So, my job hunt is not going well. There was a position I thought I was almost guaranteed, but that's fallen through. So, unless one of the last minute applications I am working on now works out, I don't see myself getting a job.

So, my thought was that I would substitute at nearby districts. Not ideal, since it's not guaranteed work, and it's not being in one classroom or school like I would want.

A friend of a friend has positions open for a toddler and pre-k teacher in a private preschool. This is not what I want to do, but it would be more permanent and in one place. Of course, then I lose the chance to get some more experience in the public school setting.

Any thoughts? I'm really down about all this, I'm just hoping and praying something will work out.

  • I am a teacher in a public school, and I would recommend trying to sub.  I think districts tend to look down at working in pre-schools or daycares.  I do not agree with it, it has just been what I have heard.  As a sub, you may make connections that could lead to other positions or hear of openings before they are publicly posted.  I know it is not fun to sub, but I think it is a better way of getting your foot in the door which could lead to what you do want.

  • Ditto benmel. I think working as a sub will be a great way for you to network. You'll get your name into the district, and you'll know all of the right people. It's not ideal, but you never know when something full-time with them will open up. Good luck!!
  • I agree with PPs about subbing. You never know where that could lead you. I started subbing again the fall after I graduated because I still hadn't found a job. (I'm not in education btw.)The following spring, I got asked to be a one-on-one aide with a child from the elementary school my mom works at (same district as the high school I was subbing at.) Then, after three weeks of that, the superintendent asked if I would be interested in being his assistant. I've been at my job for over a year now. It's all about networking and putting yourself out there. Good luck!
  • I think you'd be suprised at how often you could be asked to sub. I don't know the district or anything that you'd be working in, but MIL coordinates all the subs here and she always needs good people.

Have you looked into being an aide for the year? While it may not be exactly what you want to do, it gets your foot in the door with the public schools and starts to get your name out there for future positions.
