S/O Wedding Gowns

Have you girls decided what you are doing with your dress? I still have no idea what I want to do with mine. I've contemplated donating it, preserving it, even trying to turn it into a new dress. I really loved my dress, and maybe I'm selfish, but at this point I can't see myself being able to part with it.

I've heard of a couple of brides getting their dress completely rehabbed and turning it into something completely brand new. This is a cool concept to me, but I probably couldn't afford to do it right now.

What has everyone else done?

Re: S/O Wedding Gowns

  • At this very moment, it's laying on our guest bed.  I contemplate putting it on every once in a while, but it's alot of work to lace up! haha BUT I do plan on preserving it - I just haven't brought it yet out of sheer laziness.

I'd like to eventually use the fabric or beading for something for our children one day (i.e. a christening gown or bonnet, something for a daughter's wedding). One of my mom's good friends made me this beautiful little purse using the fabric and beadwork from both my mom's and grandma's gowns.  It was amazing and I totally bawled when they gave it to me at my shower.  I'd like to do something like that one day with it!

  • My mom took my dress to be preserved while we were in St. Lucia...I would like to do something with it (even if it is just putting it on one more time for a TTD photo session), but my mom paid a little over $400 to preserve the dress due to all the beading...so I don't know if I can pull it out of the box that it is in now....

  • ours is boxed up and preserved/cleaned.

It has a type of lid on the box that opens like a casket. My mom called my wedding dress "dead" ....

when the lid is open you see the dress in there through a clear sealed window.

    I love it.

  • I really have no idea what I am going to do with it!  It is hanging on the outside of the closet in the guest bedroom (with the door to the room cosed so the cats dont try to mess with it).  I love the idea of using something form the dress later on for my kids, that is a really neat idea!
  • I had my preserved & it's @ my parent's house for the time being. I'll move it over to our house once we are more settled.

  • Mine is in the closet in our spare room in the original garment bag.  I do eventually want to get it cleaned and preserved, but I was hoping to take some more pictures in it or even do a TTD session.  The farther we get from the wedding, the less excited I am to do this so most likely one of these days I'll just send it in for cleaning. I doubt it will be used again - no future Christenings for our Jewish children, and I know it's unlikely that a daughter would want to wear the same dress.  I just can't bear to part with it!

  • Mine is in my childhood bedroom....waiting to be preserved. Though I think I might want to wear it around the house....just once more ;) My mom made me a hankie out of the lace from her wedding dress so I would like to do something similar if possible....

We already have a baptism gown that my nonna made for me that my sister wore after me so I would like to stick with that tradition.

  • Mine is currently hanging in the original garment bag on the door of my office. Having "trashed" it already, it is now waiting to be cleaned and preserved. Another knottie recommended a great company to me that she used who cleaned and preserved it, and they have two preservation methods:

Museum style - they preserve it on a life sized hanger, complete with the rounded padded shoulders, etc. and it is in a hanging bag that you can hang and see it easily...

Or they can box it. I am going to do the Museum one...but as for the future, I only have one niece, and she may or may not want to use it, and if I have a daughter, again, in 25 years who knows what the "style" will be! So, most likely once it's preserved I'll just look at it from time to time and cherish the memories it brings back :-)

  • Well, from my previous post, you girls know what I'm doing (donating it).  I'm not the kind of person to spend money to clean/preserve/store a wedding dress.  It was a very special dress for me, and I will always remember it through pictures, but I personally like the idea of passing it on to fellow brides and having the dress live several more lives, I know, it's weird!

  • I just dropped mine off at a cleaners to have it boxed up. It'll be done Sept. 9. Too late now to do a TTD but oh well. I did refuse to spend $150 to clean it though - can't justify that since I won't be wearing it again!

I would be open to doing this at some time in future. It's still a little early for me, and I'm not ready to not have my gown at all anymore, but this is something that I have considered doing - if I did, I would likely try to find a program that helps donate gowns to military women or vets (since we have a lot of young veteran women now)...

We have a lot of those donations to military/vets around San Diegosince there are so many armed forces here.  I think that is a fabulous idea!

  • Right nows it's hanging in the bag on the door to our office/spare bedroom.  I am thinking about getting it cleaned and preserved, but we don't really have the money right now.  Plus, I really want to put it on again.

I love the idea of having something made out of it for our kid(s) some day.  I mentioned to DH about making a christening gown out of it, so we shall see.
