Ajar freezer and thawing foods

The freezer door was left cracked open all night long, and stuff was in various stages of thawing this morning.  We didn't have too much meat, but there's tons of frozen leftovers I don't want to lose.  There was still ice, but also lots of water in the bucket; ice cream was not leaking out of cartons, but was soft; and all the frozen leftovers had condensation inside the containers.

Would you toss everything? Some stuff?  Do you think it's all ok?

Re: Ajar freezer and thawing foods

  • I would toss any leftovers that are above 32 degrees or refrigerate and use it in the next couple of days.  If you try to refreeze it, it will get freezer burn and wont taste good anyway.  The ice cream, frozen veggies, and such should be fine but may be a little icy-ier than normal.

Ugh.  I wish I had pulled stuff into the fridge and let it finish defrosting so we could eat it soon, but I just left everything to refreeze and went to work.

DH just had his wisdom teeth out too, so he's limited in what he can eat and I'd have to most of the food myself.

This really capped off a crappy morning.

  • This happened to me not to long ago.

DH accidently left the freezer open (all the way open), all through the night; I woke up the next morning to find it wide open.

I tossed out ice cream that was all melted.

Closed the freezer. Items were still cold, and definatly thawing out.

I didn't throw any food out though.  This was two weeks ago, and I have no complaints.

  • Try what you've refrozen - it might not be too bad, depends on how thawed it actually got.  At the worst, you make a dinner of leftovers, it sucks and you order pizza or something - since you've already refrozen it, you might as well try it.
