  • I did!  Absolutely loved it despite all it's issues.

  • IGNORE ANYTHING FALLIN POSTS IN THIS THREAD!!!!!

  • Was it already discussed here?

I wanted to climb into the book and beat Hilly to a pulp. I wish it didn't end. I wanted to know more about what happened to the characters and Skeeter in NY.

  • I loved it, despite Fallins best efforts to make me hate it.

  • I loved it too.

  • Can someone recap Fallin's hatred for the book or link me to where she talked about it?

  • If I remember correctly, she didn't like Skeeter, but felt that the author was trying to make her identify with the character anyway.  And there was toilet humor, and we all know how Fallin feels about that.

  • It's just one of those books that's better to view in standard definition and not HD.  It's better not to see all the wrinkles and giant pores and acne.

We discussed the book over on the Nest Book Club board, but it was a number of months ago so I don't know if you could dig up any of the old posts.

  • I read it a few months ago and really loved it.

  • My mother in law brought it to the hospital for me to read and I had no idea what it was. She reads a lot of God books and self help type stuff so I was like, Are you serious? And didn't look at it for a few days. I'm an idiot.

  • If you need other books to read, I'm really enjoying the Millenium series right now.

  • I just started the new James Patterson and on my windowsill have a new Robin Cook, Deception by James Kellerman and Angela's Ashes that I co-workers sent me.

  • No no no no no.  Do not read Angela's Ashes right now.

  • On the list of books I have, it's low on the list. I don't even know what it's about but I will take your word for it.

  • I think Fallin's issue was that Skeeter never really took very much risk and she did it all to help herself get a J-O-B, not because she gave a crap about the injustice suffered by the maids.

  • I loved The Help. There are always flaws in any great book depending on the perspective of the reader, but sometimes you just have to let a story wash over you.

In a similar genre, I will recommend The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom which I finished a couple of weeks ago.  Excellent. I read it in less than two days.

  • Fenton pretty much summed up my biggest issue. I felt like the reader was meant to identify with Skeeter but Skeeter was not really changed by the Project IMO. If I felt that giving up her friendships with Hilly and the others or losing the guy had been real sacrifices for her that she gave up to help the maids, it would have been more effective. Plus the older maid was the only character I felt any sympathy for at all. The sudden change to third person felt sloppy.

  • I did hate the sudden change to third person. That was just bizarre.

  • I agree with Fallin's assessments, but loved the book anyhow.
