desperate times=desperate measures??

DH and I went through our attic and closets and got rid of a TON of excess stuff that we had laying around from merging 2 grown up lives together when we moved in together/got married.  We took a whole car load of housewares to Bridging over the weekend and we had 7 garbage bags full of linens and clothes that are going to the Epilepsy foundation today.  All donations have to be on the curb by 7, clearly  marked.  DH went home for lunch today and someone stole 3 of the bags!!  Obviously, I don't need that stuff anymore and considered it Epilepsy Foundation property as soon as it hit the curb but still... desperate much are we whoever stole it??  Stealing from a charity??  Really??  Sad.

Re: desperate times=desperate measures??

  • Maybe they were desperate and did need it and thanks to you they have it...
    No Siggy

  • Well, hopefully they really needed it!

Our neighbors once put out a free sign on an old sink and it was gone within the first hour.  Whoever took it, returned it to the yard the next day.

Here's hoping your bags don't get returned tomorrow!

  • That is sad.

I was the troop leader for my daughters Girl Scout troop when she was younger. My co-leader (cookie mom) actually stole the cookie money from the girls. Not just the troops profits, ALL the money. It was very sad. She was messed up to say the least. That troop only lasted a year, thank goodness.

  • Interesting... they probably just assumed it was free and available since it was sitting out on the curb.  Maybe they figured you didn't care who took it, so long as it was someone who needed it.  At least, that's how I feel about it when I put stuff out on the curb--it wouldn't occur to me to think of it as stealing.  So long as it's taken away and being re-used by someone, it wouldn't really bother me if someone other than the specified charity picked it up.

Of course, I never bother with itemizing those donations on my taxes, nor do I have any personal connection to the individual charities... and it certainly WOULD bother me if they rifled through everything and made a big mess.  But if they just picked it up and put it to use?  Wouldn't bother me.

  • It does bother me - The Epilepsy foundation takes all the donations and re-sells what they can to Savers and that type of store, and then ships whatever they can't use to 3rd world countries.  If it was meant for general consumption - I would have tossed it out there with a "free" sign on it.  This was all labeled "for epilepsy foundation pickup".  It cheats them out of the money, granted not a lot but that isn't the point, that they would have gotten from the bags that were filched.  Sad   And it makes my heart kinda sad that someone in my area was obviously hard up enough to take it.  I don't live on the kind of street that you are on every day unless you have to be because you live nearby.  Obviously someone is struggling and I'll never know who.
  • Yeah, unless it is clearly marked "FREE" - it's not cool for someone to help themselves.

  • Very sad unless they honestly thought it was free.   I thought the Epilepsy Fund wants it by your front door to avoid the "curb" issue.... tag it by your front door.

A funny story - a friend's dad and brother in law were out driving and saw a "FREE" sign on a big wood stand.  They are the types who love anything free, even if they don't need it, so they put it in their truck and off they went.  It was REALLY hard to open it to see what it looked like instead.... once they did, they were mortified.  It was a VALET STAND with tons of keys in it.

LMAO  They obviously rushed it back!
