What was your "First Dance"song? And why??

Obviously, I have a little too much time on my hands at work for the moment! LOL...But, as today is our 4 month Anni, I can't help but think back to our wedding :-)

Which of course, has me humming our first dance song. Which then made me wonder what some of your first dance songs were, who the artist was, and if there any sentimental or special reason behind the choice?

Ours was "You're The One", by Shane McGowan & The Popes, with Maire Brennan.

It's a beautiful Irish duet, and we loved the soft beauty of the female singer's Celtic voice, and how well it blended with the guy's more gruff (think Joe Cocker) tone...We also loved how the words so perfectly described the way we felt about each other. The lyrics were very beautiful and so romantic, I can't help but smile whenever I think of that song:

You fill my sweetest dreams
You fill my sleep
You fill my heart with love
You make my life complete
When all is said and done
Darling I know you're the one

Lying in my lonely bed
Thought about you as the moon
Listening to the sad songs down below
Thought about you as the tune
Wish that I could let you know
I think about you as the sun
So you're everywhere I go
My darling I know you're the one

The one I long to see
To drown myself in you
Surround myself safe in your arms
Forever

Darling I know you're the one

Funny how the circle turns
Funny how the flame still burns
Now that all is said and done
Darling I know you're the one

Wherever you go
I'll always know
Darling I know you're the one
You're the one
Darling I know you're the one

...((sigh))...what a good dance that was :-)

If you are familiar with the movie "Circle of Friends" (1994), then you may have heard it - it was the theme song for that movie. What about you guys??

Re: What was your "First Dance"song? And why??

  • We danced to "Lady" by Mojo because we wanted to do this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru8nrDYeea0  (not cool until about 1:50)

  • Ours was "Better Together" by Jack Johnson.  This was one of the hardest wedding planning tasks for me. We didn't already have a "song" and have very different tastes in music; the only artist we both love is Springsteen and all of his love songs are depressing or weird.

I asked DH to find some song options since he is more into music and has a huge Itunes list. I had to nag him to do this for months, but finally the day before our final meeting with the DJ he played about 10 different songs for me.  Most I was "eh" about but when he played the Jack Johnson song I loved it. It has a really simple sentiment, isn't overly sappy or gushy, just "it's always better when we're together".  The other song I loved was Lucky by Jason Mraz/Coby Kaillat and we had a hard time choosing between the two, but I could tell that DH liked the other song better.  We literally decided on the car ride on the way to the DJ to go with Better Together.

  • Our song was "Dance With You" by LIVE.  the one lyric really did it for us

"came sickened to your shores, you showed me what this life was for"
The lead singer wrote the song for his wife, plus we both LOVE LIVE! :)

  • OMG!!! Awesome job :-) That was so beautifully done :-) Did you guys work that out on your own, or did you take lessons?

I would have liked to have done something like that, but Hubs has three left feet and doesn't dance much - I felt very lucky to have had a first dance with him...lol....

  • We used Lucky as our first dance song because we really just liked what it said. Of course the refrain is the best part but we really loved it! We have totally different tastes in music and we didn't have a "song" that was just ours. So it took us a while of channel flipping in the car on the satellite radio until we finally found something we agreed on and that was danceable!

    Lucky lyrics
Songwriters: Colbie Caillat, and Jason Mraz,

Do you hear me? I'm talking to you
Across the water across the deep blue ocean
Under the open sky, oh my, baby I'm trying

Boy I hear you in my dreams
I feel your whisper across the sea
I keep you with me in my heart
You make it easier when life gets hard

I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
    Ooh ooh ooh

They don't know how long it takes
Waiting for a love like this
    Every time we say goodbye
I wish we had one more kiss
I'll wait for you I promise you, I will

I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again

Lucky we're in love in every way
Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed
Lucky to be coming home someday

And so I'm sailing through the sea
To an island where we'll meet
You'll hear the music fill the air
I'll put a flower in your hair

    Though the breezes through trees
Move so pretty you're all I see
As the world keeps spinning 'round
You hold me right here, right now

I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again

I'm lucky we're in love in every way
Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed
Lucky to be coming home someday

    Ooh ooh ooh
    Ooh ooh ooh, ooh

choreographed by yours truly, thankyouverymuch!  I taught it to DH in our garage and he caught on quite quickly, then we had my best friend (and the only person in the world who knew we were doing it) video tape the night before the rehearsal so we knew we didn't look too stupid :)

What a beautiful lyric!!! I have never heard this song - I'm going to have to google it now!

And I also love "Better Together" - that is a perfect first dance song - We were the opposite - Hubs left the song chore to me, since I love music, and we had so many songs from different stages in our relationship, that it was really hard...I ended up playing him about 15 - and the one that we chose is the one that really resonated with both of us!

  • We danced to "Can't Help Falling in Love with You" sung by Elvis.  I mean honestly, that voice!!!  We don't have a "song", I've just always loved loved love this one.  Some of my favorite lyrics:

Like a river flows surely to the sea
    Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you

We also had a second dance to an old Dean Martin song called "You'll Always be the One I Love" - very cute!!

@ Rachel - that was awesome!!!
@ Laura - I love "Lucky" too!  That one was a close second!

  • Laurie: Those lyrics are very beautiful! I love how for the rest of our lives, we'll hear this one song, and it will always instantly transport us back to that day and time Smile

  • Rachel, I am dying to watch!  But I am going to be good and wait until I get home.

We danced to "The Best is Yet to Come" by Frank Sinatra.  I love the song, it is so classic, and  I think that the lyrics are great.

Out of the tree of life, I just picked me a plum
You came along and everything started to hum
Still it's a real good bet, the best is yet to come
The best is yet to come, and won't that be fine
You think you've seen the sun, but you ain't seen it shine
Wait till the warm-up is underway
Wait till out lips have met
Wait till you see that sunshine day
    You ain't seen nothin' yet
The best is yet to come, and won't that be fine
The best is yet to come, come the day that your mine
Come the day that your mine
I'm gonna teach you to fly
    We've only tasted the wine
We're gonna drain that cup dry
Wait till your charms are right, for the arms to surround
You think you've flown before, but you ain't left the ground
Wait till you're locked in my embrace
Wait till I hold you near
Wait till you see that sunshine place
There ain't nothin' like it here
The best is yet to come, and won't that be fine
The best is yet to come, come the day that your mine

  • Beautiful, Courtney! Sinatra is classic :-)

  • Lucky by Colbie Callait and Jason Mraz - We picked it out together - Well, I picked it out and asked him if he liked it and he did. It's not a super slow song, and it's got cute lyrics so it stuck :)
  • "Lucky" was a very close second for us, too. Jason Mraz is the second love of my life, but we wanted something faster-paced. Lucky was one of two slow songs played the whole reception though
  •  @Rach:  I so remembering you stressing out over that dance!  Yet it turned out so good!

We went with "Love Me Like You'll Never See Me Again" by Alicia Keys.  The song just has so much meaning!  And Alicia Keys is my woman crush....

If I had no more time
No more time left to be here
Would you cherish what we had?
Was it everything that you were looking for?
If I couldn't feel your touch
And no longer were you with me
I'd be wishing you were here
To be everything that I'd be looking for
I don't wanna forget the present is a gift
And I don't wanna take for granted the time you may have here with me
'Cause Lord only knows another day is not really guaranteed

So every time you hold me
Hold me like this is the last time
    Every time you kiss me
Kiss me like you'll never see me again
    Every time you touch me
Touch me like this is the last time
    Promise that you'll love me
Love me like you'll never see me again

    Oh Oh Oh

How many really know what love is?
    Millions never will
Do you know until you lose it
That it's everything that we are looking for
When I wake up in the morning
    You're beside me
I'm so thankful that I found
Everything that I been looking for

I don't wanna forget the present is a gift
And I don't wanna take for granted the time you may have here with me
'Cause Lord only knows another day is not really guaranteed

    So everytime you hold me
Hold me like this is the last time
    Every time you kiss me
Kiss me like you'll never see me again
(can you do that for me baby)
    Every time you touch me
    (see we don't really know)
Touch me like this is the last time
    (see everyday we never know)
    Promise that you'll love me
(I want you to promise me)
Love me like you'll never see me again
(like you'll never see me again)

  • We danced to John Legend "stay with you" I am a HUGE fan of his and knew that we were going to dance to that song when it first came out. Read: way before we were engaged lol
    image
  • We danced to Guilty by Yann Tiersen:  We both love this composer and it was featured in Amelie, which is a favorite.  And we love the antique sound of the song (it sounds like it's being played from a record):

    Lyrics:

is it a sin, is it a crime
loving you dear like i do
    if it's a crime, then, i'm guilty
    guilty of loving you

maybe i'm wrong dreaming of you
    dreaming the lonely night thru
    if it's a crime, then, i'm guilty
    guilty of dreaming of you

    what can i do?
    what can i say?
    after i've taken the blame
    you say, 'you're through
    you'll go your way'

but i'll always feel just the same
maybe, i'm right, maybe i'm wrong
loving you dear like i do
    if it's a crime, then, i'm guilty

    guilty of loving you

  • nice those are all great!

we had such a hard time choosing but we did finally choose "The Way I Am" by Ingrid Michaelson and I'm glad we did as it was totally chill and laid back as was the rest of the wedding.  Plus it was like 2 1/2 mins long - nice!

Here are the lyrics, which i looooove:

If you were falling, then I would catch you
You need a light, I'd find a match

Cuz I love the way you say good morning
And you take me the way I am

If you are chilly, here take my sweater
Your head is aching; I'll make it better

Cuz I love the way you call me baby
And you take me the way I am

I'd buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair
Sew on patches to all you tear

Cuz I love you more than I could ever promise
And you take me the way I am
You take me the way I am

You take me the way I am

  • Our first dance song was to "You Save Me" by Kenny Chesney.

We were going to go with "Bless the Broken Road" by Rascal Flatts, but DH really likes "You Save Me" and told me thats what I did. So we went with it...

  • Our first dance song was also "Can't Help Falling in Love With You" - originally by Elvis, but we danced to the version by Harry Connick, Jr. We both love the song but chose a cover version, mostly because in the chorus of the Elvis version there's this funny noise that DH and I think sounds like a cat meowing.. and we laugh every single time we hear it.. hahaa - yeah we're weird. But we love the song - it's so classic :)
