Not happy with homemade polish

I am mixing vinegar and olive oil as my furniture polish. Maybe I am putting in too much olive oil but it separates almost immediately after being shaken. When I dip in my rag all I get is olive oil. Then when I wipe the surface only some of it is shiny and the other looks dry. Any suggestions?

Re: Not happy with homemade polish

  • I've never used it, but the recipe i've heard uses mostly vinegar or lemon juice, with a few drops of oil, so perhaps you are using too much oil?  When making dressing, if you add oil slowly to the vinegar while whisking it incorporates better; maybe that would work for you here, too.  Also, maybe using a different oil would work better (jojoba, maybe?).

  • Oil will always float on top of vinegar no matter how much you mix it and what kind of oil you use. Basic chemistry...

  • Emulsions are pretty basic science, too.
