Critique my menu please

Im having my family over for dinner tomorrow night, its casual and will be watching a TV show together after.

Honey Baked Ham

4 Bean salad (I bought a large jar of this from Costco-Paisley Farm, do you eat it hot or cold?)

These potatoes: http://fortheloveofcooking-recipes.blogspot.com/2009/10/hasselback-potatoes.html

Mac & Cheese

Olive/Relish tray

Some sort of dinner roll (either crescents from the can or Im looking for suggestions on home made, any recipes?)

Dessert, not sure.

Re: Critique my menu please

  • You serve Paula Deen's 3 bean salad (green, wax, kidney) cold and that's the only one I'm familiar with.

If you have macaroni, potatoes and dinner rolls, you'll have three starches.  I'd probably add/trade in a vegetable.

  • Thanks for letting me know about the bean salad- I have never had it before!

I know its a lot of starches :(   Its basically all my Dad will eat, he's so picky.  WDYT about corn?

    Corn's a vegetable, but it's a starchy one lol

If it's all he'll eat, then it's not an oversight on your part, KWIM?  Heck, I'd love to eat your menu - sounds delish, but I've been dieting for so long I'd feel guilty...but I mean, I can't be rude and not eat what's put in front of me ;)

  • Oh crud, I didnt think of corn being a starch!  I didnt even realize it, LOL.  Hmmm....
  • I agree with adding a veggie, but think it should be a green-non starchy one...even if you dad doesn't like it, there's still plenty of food for him to eat!  Everything else sounds yummy!!!

As for the bean salad...I don't know, but you may want to try to go to the company's website...sometimes they offer recipes and serving suggestions.

  • It sounds very similar to a menu I served at one of my parties last year.

I tend to think a scalloped potato (chive and sour cream version) is a better match to the rest of the meal than the potato you posted, but if you prefer the other potato recipe, I think it's fine.

I also would add one more vegetable.  Probably something simple - steamed with a dab of butter and parsely.  Depends on what your family likes.  I made a mix of green beens and carrots for my party.

  • Bobby Flay's parker house rolls on www.foodnetwork.com are amazing!  They are a little bit of work, but well worth it.
  • Thanks ladies!  There is a green veggie in the bean salad- the green beans.  I will see what kind of green veggie I have in the freezer, Im trying to make most of this meal with what I already have.

Oh man, parker house rolls, LOVE those!

  • Serve the bean salad cold.  I also agree with the pps about adding a veg.  Glazed carrots would be cheap and easy.  This makes me think of Easter so maybe some deviled eggs?

  • Dinner was good :)  Thanks for all of your advice.

However, the bean salad was nasty!  I had never had it before, and the flavor just wasnt good at all (sweet and sour) I gagged trying to eat it.  But, a few people liked them.
