silly childbirth question
My co-worker just had a baby and came into show him off today.
Without going into a lot of detail I asked her how things went this time around and she said good. She was induced and went from 3cm to 8cm in an hour. She then said she had the baby at an 8cm and her doctor told her that it was too late for a epidural, the baby was coming. Can you help me understand this? I feel dumb for not knowing, but I thought you always had to reach a 10 to deliver vaginally.
Re: silly childbirth question
I think sometimes there just isn't enough time for an Epi. She was already at 8 cm and got there quick, they would still have to call the anestisilogist (sp), by the time he got there she probably would have been pushing or the baby would have been trying to crawl out himself (LOL). And even if she did get it, there may not have been enough time for it to take the full effect.
I have heard many stories from 2nd time moms that progressed so fast they didn't even get a chance for an Epi. My neighbor was one of them.
Oh and this happened to one of my BFFs with her second. She was induced with the first, had a c-section. Baby #2 she went into labor the day she was to get her scheduled c-section, progressed super fast, no time to even get an OR ready for a c-section, no time for an epi, had the baby vaginally, she almost gave birth in the elevator on the way to L&D
I figure she might have had a tear, but didn't ask that question. She said she never progressed more than 8cm she said.
I gotcha about the no-time for epidurals. That happens all the time, I just hope not to me
