God Parent Gifts

Hi everyone. I became a god mother a week ago and we're going to see my niece on Labor Day weekend for her christening. I'm new to the whole god mother thing so I'm a little out of my element. What do you get as a gift?

I was thinking just giving her $500 to start a college fund, but I don't know if that's the norm.

Any suggestions, thoughts, advice on this one?

Re: God Parent Gifts

  • I think that sounds very generous.
  • I agree with Punky, I think that's very generous!

If that is what you want to do and you have the means to do it, I would go for it. However, definitely don't feel pressure to go that large with the gift, because I don't think it's necessary or expected (although I'm sure it would be hugely appreciated!)

  • Yeah, that's a ton of $$$ in my circle.  I am my brother's godmother and didn't do anything special for him, ever.  My godmother (my aunt) just encourages me to go to church and stuff.  I guess it depends on what is normal for your family.

Congrats on the new neice and god daughter!

  • Thanks everyone! Sometimes I go overboard with gifts so maybe I'll scale it down a bit!
  • I just recently became a Godmommy myself and gave the baby's parents a check (not $500 though, I gave $150) and then I gave her a cute hand painted piggy bank with a $20 bill to start.
  • I gave my niece a cross necklace. She's too young to wear it now but she can wear it when she get's a little older. I bought a pretty nice one at JC Penny.
Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”
