Go Mississippi!

My favorite quote:

When Brandy complained to the School Board, "They told me that they 'Go by the mother's race b/c with minorities the father isn't generally in the home.'

I get that they were trying to ensure that there was some diversity on student council, but how in god's name did this get through the number of people who had to approve it?

Re: Go Mississippi!

  • you come from a special place, SB. How did you and buddha turn out so awesome?
  • I don't understand how these little pockets of this still exist. Hasn't the internet shined light in every little roach-infested corner of the country yet?

Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.
  • I am flabbergasted and dumbfounded.

There are pockets.  Jackson, H-burg, the Memphis burbs and some of the coastal towns turn out some reasonable people.  And then there are the places you should never, never go.

  • How is it that stuff like this still happens?  How is it that the parents haven't demanded that this policy change, like decades ago?  Why would anyone other than an out-and-out racist willingly live here?  I'm so perplexed.

  • I've lived here nearly all of my life, and I have honestly never encountered something like that. I know the wackos are out there, no doubt. I just tend to come in contact with more normal people.

Yeah, I grew up in Jackson and now live in H-Burg, so that is part of it. There are rural pockets in the Delta and the mid state that are just decades behind in terms of education and exposure to the rest of the country. These are the kind of rural communities where you are born there and never leave and it's perfectly acceptable to me married and pregnant at 17.

  • I'm a little sad that this stuff still happens, but not surprised.

Also, a bit random, but Connor is convinced that the literary sluts badge is a cartoon and he keeps telling me he wants to watch that one.  Maybe I've got a reader in the works!

  • There is also a generation slowly dying out that just honestly doesn't know better. I know that sounds strange, but people in my great-grandparents' generation and even the upper end of my grandparents' set grow up in a world where using the N word was not a racial slam. It was just the appropriate word for referring to an African American. I'm not saying it's right, but it's hard to break in someone that old.

Zane's grandfather uses it, and we all cringe every time, but he's 90 years old. I'm not going to say anything to him. I'm just going to ensure that Ethan is exposed to it as little as possible.

I don't know if I'm expressing this correctly because I don't think it's an excuse. I just don't think it's changeable. Does that make sense?

  • We should just bomb those places and rebuild from scratch.

That I could totally get behind. At the very least, we should sterilize them so the populations just die out.

Off topic, but growing up in Jackson, did you ever encounter the DeBeukelaer family?
