Help getting cigarette smoke out of house?

This is the most annoying thing that has happened Our neighbors had someone staying at their house for almost 5 weeks and apparently she was a heavy smoker and smoked beside the house where our air intake is located. We finallty figured out that was the problem last week when we kept smelling cigarette smoke and have been working vigorously to get it out of our house since then. In my opinion, it seems to smell better in the downstairs, but has now drifted to the upstairs bedrooms. So our master bedroom closet and as well as the office smell like smoke the worst.

We have used febreze and plug ins, changed out the filters, and broken up pieces of charcoal which is supposed to pull the smell out of the house. Is there anything that I am missing?

Re: Help getting cigarette smoke out of house?

  • Some friends of ours had the same problem with cigarette smoke in the house they just moved into because the previous owners were smokers. They had some company come out and bomb their house or something (I can't remember exactly what it was called). They had to stay somewhere else for 2 nights while they did it and they said now you would never be able to tell someone smoked it the house.

  • Since it isn't getting so hot now, would you be able to open the windows and see if some fresh air would help remove the smoke?  That is the only other thing I can think of!
  • That's horrible! I hate dirty smokers. Angry When I lived in an apartment our neighbors apparently smoked in their apartment and it would sneak into our and it drove me nuts!!
  • When I had a small house fire, I had to store my furniture.  I put open huge cans of ground coffee in the unit and it really soaked up the smell.  You could try that if you don't have pets that would try to eat the grounds.

I'd also remind the neighbor that if they have visitors again, to have them smoke in a different area.
